It happened... Crashed my bike!

Sorry to hear about this, and good you are not too injured. Now seems like the perfect time to customize your bike! Hope the bike is not a write off....

I know the feeling. Crashed the bike in Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway this past Friday. Broke radius and ulna in my left forearm

Ouch! Is it a clean break or did they have to install the metal plates over the cracks?

Got some plates and screws to remember this by

regder, I can relate to that unfortunately. Have the same plate on my right radius. Thankfully, my elna 'only' popped out from the joint, so they put the joint back together. Takes a year to completely heal (i.e. get to the same amount of weight lifting exercises in the gym without almost any pain). The only advice I can give is to absolutely follow the physiotherapists directions and do all the exercises when they'll clear you for physio.

Ouch, thanks for the heads up on recovery. How soon after did you start lifting again?

When they'll take the cast off, you will not be able to rotate your wrist at all, they will do a lot of work on your arm to get your rotation and general movement back. I remember that at 6-months point they cleared me for full weight lifting, but it would hurt doing some exercises, like push-ups. At three-months check they tell you to take it easy and do a gradual increase in weight because the arm is still healing. The best thing is that my wrists are much stronger than they used to be after all the physio recommended exercises :)

So my bike finally went in this week to get checked out and fixed.. Just got a call from the dealer. They've been going over the list of parts the insurance company provided and making a list of their own. The insurance company's cheque was for just under 3k. So far the dealer has a list that's up to about 6k and they're still compiling it.

So we'll see what happens... They might just write it off. But that being said, the dealer already has deposited their cheque because they won't order the parts until they get payment...

have a bad feeling that my season may be over...

The insurance company already cut you a check for $3 grand? Does that mean their cleaning their hands of any further payouts to you?

BTW, glad you made out relatively ok. Those types of accidents rarely have a good outcome:(

When people gave me this advice after my accident when i was also "ok" i never listened, hope you do

!!!GO TO THE DOCTOR!!! even if you feel you are ok, trust me you are not, something may have twisted on your spine or whatever and you won't feel it for a few months.

I wrote up a bunch of info on the process after my accident

If you are interested do a search on my started threads for it

+1 My knees hurt after my crash. Two days latter I was perfectly OK, guess armor did a good job. It was only a week latter that both my wrists started hurting. It took them over four months to get better. It's really weird how the most serious injury did not even hurt me at first.

Funny thing is, I went to a doctor to get checked out. I find family doctors useless and pointless to see, but my gf insisted to get checked out. I explained what happened, told them I wanted to get check out for any injury. What did they do? Just a x-ray, and told me nothing's broken. No ****. What a waste of money.

That is a little puzzling. When I had my crash, the appraiser from State Farm came to my house to look at the bike (I wasn't home to talk with him about discovered damage). I had already made arrangements to trailer the bike to Z1 to get my own appraisal done. Z1 made a very thorough examination and discovered a lot of damage that the SF guy missed. I made sure that SF sent their appraiser to Z1 so that a "meeting of the minds" could occur. Fortunately they sent a different guy, much more experienced, and he agreed with all of Z1's discoveries. At that point the cheque was cut and everyone was happy.

Fortunately I am not speaking from experience but from stories I've heard. My neighbour and her husband got rear ended and a year later a blood vessel burst in the back of her neck. It was like she had a minor stroke. She was only 40. Then she got hit with depression and couldn't work. She seems okay now but her and her family had it rough for a few years.
When chit like this happens it is best to fall and stay down for the ambulance. You could have been in shock and made things much worse, Plus there is a better chance that the charges against the driver won't be reduced.
I hope you didn't sign anything with your insurance company because the appraisers get a bonus for every person they screw over. Lots of laughs back at the office when they get an inexperienced person. Of course this is something you don't want to have experience with but...

I'm with statefarm as well.
The guy came to my place, went over the bike, printed out an estimate and the cheque came in the mail a few days later. I told him that I needed to get it towed to the dealer and checked out for additional damage. I guess they only look for the obvious stuff. he said they would reimburse for the tow if I submitted the receipt, and that the dealer should contact them regarding any additional damage found. And I guess they've found a lot!

I'm going tomorrow to check it out, and get a full estimate. Then I'm going to have to follow up with statefarm. We'll see what happens.

Annoying to say the least!

Yikes!!! Glad to see you are ok

Glad you are ok. Agreeing with everyone that is saying when you get into an accident make sure you get checked thoroughly. From my experience and what I am still going through I try to give my friends the best advise when dealing with getting hurt. Just going to give out some info that hopefully helps others when dealing with a collision.

I had xrays done after being hit by a car and thrown 25 feet while I was standing on the side walk. Did not break anything, did not hit head. It's 7 years later and I am still hurting. I did all the right things like take time off work when I could not go in, physio, chiro, massage and so many assesments. I should have stayed off work longer and continued physio longer(was doing it for about two years). Also should have pushed for an MRI/Cat scan done soon after. I waited five years to say to my doctor this is retarded, why am I still in pain. He sent me to a Rhumatologist that stated I have a slipped disc in my neck and worn discs through out my whole back and judging from my symtoms looks like I have fybromialgia on top of that. Sent to an other specialist nuerologist to check for nerve damage and he found that there is no nerve damage but told me to never have my neck adjusted by a chiropractor...thanks could have used that information the first year and a half that I had adjustments done after my accident.

This year I finally started going to a Fibromyalgia specialist and working on getting me to what is normal for someone with fibro, which isn't pain free but just managing my pain better.

To cut it short, make sure you tell your doctor everything you are feeling so that it is on paper. Also, if stuff isn't feeling back to normal after a normal amout of time, push your doctor to send you to specialist.

I suffered and still suffer from post traumatic stress and even when I told my doctor this he still didn't send me to a phyciatrist. Six years later and now am getting treatment for that.

Also, if you are in a serious collision get a lawyer asap. They are free and look for one that takes only 30% or less. They only take a persentage of what you will be awarded. They have your back and help you do things proper and don't let the insurance scam you out of what is deserved. I know sound funny cause people scam insurance companies all the time but because of that, people that are truly hurt end up getting the shaft and not getting what they deserve with out fighting for it.

Hope this info helps at least one person.

So the repair bill is about $6000. Statefarm opted to pay for the repairs. I must admit, I was kind of suprised to find that out since it is more than the bike is worth. Now hopefully I can get back on the road before the season is over!

Good to have her back. Riding strong too!

As someone that has never ridden and has a bike sitting in the garage waiting for the spring to come... threads like these scare the **** out of me..

What's everyone's concensus on state-farm when you get into a wreck? Do they just inspect the bike and estimate damages or do they pay out the "purchase price" on the bill of sale *ahem.
