Is this a good bike/deal?

its only 7800km, at $3300 it seems like a good deal, esp since im getting from a dealer and not a private seller(who might sell a lemon)

I also managed to find a brand new one for 3999 + tax from a dealer and am now trying to decide between the two, and wondering if its worth saving that 700$ or spend the 700 and get the piece of mind that comes with brand new, as opposed to used bike with low kms from a dealer (Assuming dealers dont sell their customers bad/faulty bikes)

Thoughts from the veteran riders?

Also on most modern bikes, how much mileage is considered medium/high? Provided its had some maintenance and the rider wasn't stunting or thrashing it around like a moron?

Doc mentioned in another that 25k for a honda is barely breaking the engine in...(Id like to think this applies to any modern japanese bike, modern being a model from the last 10 years)

I'd not apply that to all bikes. Certainly Vstrom motors keep going and going ...one guy has 400k miles on his!!!.

There are other issues that you would need to go to the forums for. I'd simply not buy a 250/300 new as you are very likely to out grow it. That Honda was the better deal.

I bought my Vstrom with 103,000 km on it and it runs beautifully ...just took it to the East Coast on a 7k km trip in June. High mileage does not bother me as long as it's well maintained and is a known reliable bike.

It's all about maintenance - finding a bike the rider has maintained well. This is first bike and likely a 2 year buy.

If your insurance can tolerate it and you have the funds ...a CB500x might be a 5 year ride for you and better seating position if you are going distance. Just plain fun and you can likely get financing on it.

well put sir

I did look at the cbr500r, and it was a good deal, just dont know if paying twice the numerical value as compared to the ninja is worth it or not (Not to mention it is private as opposed to dealer, but as you said its a honda and if i take it to a mechanic it might be doable)

It will likely prevent the need to move up. I suspect your insurance will prevent the CBR500r from being feasible but check first

Personally, I'd look for a bike with ABS if it's an option. A 300 is a nice bike if you want to tear around town, or out on the 80 kph highways. If you're planning on using the 400 series a lot, then a bigger bike makes sense, although using the 400 series on a bike does not. A 500 might suit your needs, or the gear ratios might be just enough off to make it a chore. Same for a 650. But buying a larger bike is a much more significant investment, especially if you don't use or need that extra power. That's why it's much more economical to start small, and explore what your riding habits are, before you make a jump.

Any modern 500 or 650 will blow off any 400 series speed limit without breaking a sweat and keep up in the fast lane. ( possible exception an earlier KLR650 will work pretty hard ...mine's happier around 90-100 indicated ).

The Honda 500 series is a 471 cc motor and if it's the same to insure or close as the 300 ....it's a better choice long term. Will cruise at lower RPMs and of course it's a twin.

I agree about ABS and the CB500x has it standard....they are around for $6990 new just now.

come on dont you guys remember the 3 threads about bikes with poppa, they always end up at the 300 is the best bike ever. Just accept it.

Id have to PM frekeguy see if he can come out and inspect the bike before i buy , or maybe someone else who is an experienced rider/mechanically inclined near brampton(Perhaps Freke has a pick up truck on which we can take the bike after purchase?)

(I can pay a small fee...or pay for gas or perhaps buy his choice of favorite beer?)

Quick question, what is the procedure from paying for the bike to actually riding it? Usually the dealer would take care of everything, but with a private seller you have to do some of the leg work?

What is the process step by step?

title(Ownership?)/registration(not sure what the difference is), plating and insurance(Im assuming you need to be insured to get a plate)
and all the fees that accompany.(How much are the fees at each step? Does anyone know?)

I understand you also need a safety done? For the registration? Or plating?

If the bike is still being paid off, how will i know its transferred to my name? Is there some way of checking to see who is the owner?

Sorry new rider/bike, so im somewhat confused about the whole process

The process of buying a bike in step by step format is in many many threads on here, I think that was asked less than a week ago, or at least a multipart thread was being discussed very recently.

I found a bike for sale pretty close to home, thought I could insure it with an M1. Turns out I couldnt, they want an M2 to insure a bike.
The seller gave me his plate (with no sticker) I rode it home, took the bus back gave him his plate back.
Now its in the garage, as I have the safety course scheduled for end of September

wow, ballsy

Is it under your name?

You rode it without insuring it?

What bike is it?

@MacDoc, you've never ridden a Suzuki 650 Savage then. A friend had one, and she had issues with the gearing on 400 series highways. She got rid of it for a Honda 750 Shadow, that she still has.
But she rode them both across the country, which not everyone is likely to do.

As far as purchasing:

I checked out the bike and UVIP with a friend.
The owner delivered the bike to a mutually agreeable shop for the certification.
He paid for the repairs. (One of the front seals had a leak).
I paid him, and transferred the ownership.
Then picked up the bike from the shop.

Best to make sure that the bike is clear of leans, you don't want to inherit the previous owner's debt.
But that should be on the UVIP.

ah gotcha, so the UVIP will tell you who has the title of the bike? The seller or the bank?
How do you transfer ownership? And get plated?

Before you start asking anymore of the same questions. Please read this. It's a sticky for a reason.

ah, thank you good sir

One question it didnt answer however, what are 'ownership papers'?

Is it just a piece of paper that says 'Title' on it or is it like a lengthy contract? or can i just take a napkin and have the seller write and sign "This bike now belongs to big poppa"?

Werent you in the other thread calling some guy a sucker for paying dealer price for his bike? And you dont even know what the ownership is? Have you ever owned a vehicle before?

Ownership is the green paper you get at the MTO, plate portion stays with the plate owner, vehicle portion goes with the owner of the vehicle.

Had a chance to drive the Ninja 300 a while back and enjoyed it a lot. Plenty of engine for riding on the 400 series highway depending on your height and weight. No issues keeping up with traffic and just a fun lil bike to toss around. Having said that I rode a 250 for close to 30k and definitely got my money's worth out of it when I bought new. For $3300 it should be an easy decision. I'd get it as a starter bike but would prefer ABS (didn't check if this one has it or not).

Atleast you provided me some help before attempting to mock me.

If i recall he referred to himself as a sucker after realizing that he had been duped.(thats why they are colloquially referred to as "Stealerships")

he didnt pay dealer price,he paid well above it. (the same dealership that is selling a ninja 300 for 6k + PDI,frieght, taxes, admin fees, would you pay close to 7k for a ninja 300?)
I wasnt making fun of the poor fellow who paid 7k for a cbr300, i rather sympathized with him. It seems you dont know the difference between mockery and sympathy
