Is it worth buying a SHOEI TZ-R helmet now?

I saw them on clearance online at GP bikes for $250. The price seems attractive for this helmet.

Is this a wise decision as a first full-face helmet?

Or should I save up a bit more money and get the newer Qwest?

Apparently the Qwest is leaps and bounds better, and it's supposedly even better than the RF-1100 I have now. Get the Qwest, I don't think it's that much more.

Nevermind, it starts at $320 USD for the solids. Graphics are $425.

TZ-R have venting issues which you'll be paying for both in the hot weather (you'll be boiling) and in cool weather (fogging). Before looking at makes and models, look at what fits. Then you can look at the other tradeoffs.

I got one in October for $350 at Royal. I have had no issues with it other than fogging in cold weather but that was fixed with a breath box. $250 is awesome for a DOT and SNELL approved helmet by Shoei.

Check the manufacture date on the helmet though. If they're clearance, they might be old. I think you're supposed to change helmets every 5 years or something, due to the EPS liner degrading. Not sure though, and too lazy to Google it right now.

$250 currently gets you a Shark RSR2 Indy from sportbiketrackgear. Nice light top of the range helmet.

Motorcycle helmets are not made of yogurt, they don't magically spoil after 5 years. Those helmet are stored in a box inside a climate controlled storage room. There will be no significant degradation whatsoever even if stored for a couple of years.

Excellent option if it fits your noggin (fits me just fine )

Perfect fit for me too. Just wondering though...my venting (in the helmet) doesn't feel super high (it's OK though) but I wear a helmet liner. You find yours ok? Wondering if there's a blockage.

I actually ended up going with an RSX (it's more street friendly) but the lid architecture is the same and so's the fit.. The differences are mostly in venting and you might save a couple of grams (even though RSX is still in the 1350 range). For some reason I thought RSR2 had better venting than RSX.. Never had any issues in any weather with mine. It doesn't have to be G-Max style superventing.. As long as it doesn't cook your noggin or fog up, it's all good. Too much venting = too much noise.

Had a TZ-R, have a RSR2 now. The Shoei is a good helmet but fogs easily, the Shark is an awesome helmet that was once Shark's top of the line, light, doesn't fog, good venting. I'd pick the Shark

One caveat: As long as it fits the OP

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess need to go try on a few helmets before deciding which is right for me.

Hopefully I can find one that fits nicely for a good price locally.
