Insurance too high?

40 more investigations are under way.. and those are the ones they know off.

We should bring back capital and other harsher punishments. Clearly our system is very lax in sentencing criminals. Make an example of a few, the rest will reconsider.

Do you honestly think prices would decrease if they were able to bust every scammer out their? Probably not. They would still keep prices up. This only truly will benefit the company's not us.

yep, thats the truth. When has *any* company passed on savings to you without charging for it elsewhere? Capitalism is all about MONEY

Insurance companies are regulated as to how much profit % they are allowed to make. So yes, if they busted all the scammers out there then the price of insurance would drop.

Doubt it highly.

Yes I do believe that our insurance premiums would go down if fraudulent claims were to disappear (fat chance of that happening!). The rates for the GTA are so high because of the high $ value of the pay outs to victims. Because of these scams REAL accident victims have a very difficult time claiming their injuries and fighting with insurance companies because everything is thought of as a scam. These scum are allowed to operate because the penalties are typically a slap on the wrist, and then they get out (if any jail time at all) and do it all over again.

As per Freak, harsher punishment may be a deterrent, but only until for a short period of time...lawyers and the scammers will figure out how to play the system and we're back at square one. Make it unprofitable and then you'll see a decrease...unfortunately that's wishful thinking.

And you don't think they would have 10000 other reasons why its so high? Look, we all have rules to abide by at work. Rules out in place to make things work as they should. However someone always finds away around these issues. If its not scammers it's people on the road with no insurance, or a high concentration of impaired drivers, or too many speeders. I don't need to go on. Just because its supposed to work a certain way by no means it does. If prices were to come down it would probably be like $50 off your current policy. I am not going to flat out say IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, but rather ill believe it when I see it as that's all any of us can actually do.

I don't think it's just busting all the scammers would bring the insurance down alone but it's the message that they can send and changing the culture of people seeing insurance as an easy way of getting off work for a long period of time, and getting free money without thinking of the consequences.

At least now some people will think twice and that might discourage them from pulling off these scams.

That's something I would agree with, at least I hope it would turn out that way.

+1 as above...changing the culture is the way to go in order to make any dent in our premiums...personally I would be happy to see it...but it's wishful thinking at best and it's not changing...probably not in my lifetime anyway (32 lol).

Venom I agree with your statement...there's always someone that will find a way to bend/break the rules and unfortunately the changes are pretty damn small that they would get caught.

organized crime at a new level, dude's a boss~!

I was in Montreal one time when some fraudster pedestrian was trying to con drivers out of cash by bouncing off their hoods on pedestrian crossings. He'd cause a fuss and try to get cash on the spot. One driver got savvy and called the cops and refused to budge. That drew quite a crowd.

Punishment as a deterrent never works. Ever. See the U.S. as a prime example of that. Criminals typically do not consider or weigh the consequences when performing their crimes, since the majority assume they won't be caught.

Are we lax in punishment? Maybe. I think careless drivers who cause deaths should be sentenced harsher, but not because it will prevent others from doing the same.

The blame for our insurance premiums being the most expensive in North America falls squarely at the feet of the Ontario Liberal Party, and nowhere else.

I just take issue with the last part. It's the previous governments before that and also a lot to do with the insurance industry itself.

Insurance reform isn't sexy enough to get anyone to do something serious about it. So, the industry lobbies, the government makes changes, we all lose.

Really? Some countries have the death penalty for folks getting caught with drugs. I'm certain their drug use is lower than ours.
