Insurance Cost - Ninja 250

Hey everyone,

I'm kind of new around here; I expect this question probably gets asked alot.

I'm looking to getting a bike for next year, mostly because of schooling, and all that off season bikes here are cheaper for the most part.

I was looking to get a Ninja 250 for my first bike, I'll be 21 next year, and I was wondering in Ontario, Canada; what would be the best insurance companies to look into? and what kind of rates should I expect, I'm assuming the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course will help lower insurance.

Would the 2008-Current models be too much for insurance? I know the demand/price for these bikes doesn't fluctuate so much so I'm not concerned about that pricing.

Thanks everyone =]

Edit: I currently have no accidents/tickets on my car's insurance for like 2 years or so.

Why don't you just call an agent and find out?

Im looking at a 250cc bike too and mine is coming out to be about $65/month. But then again I'm much older than you and have had my G for longer than you've had your license.

Just start shopping around and getting quotes.

Theres a thread with a flow chart on what company is best depending on age and your bike.

Use Kanetix.ca or shop separately. Try Jevon, state farm, TD, Belair etc.

Takes like 10 minutes to get a quote.

Welcome!

Here is the sticky thread you want:

Don't bother with Kanetix -- it is really inaccurate for motorcycles so you'll have to call around. I suggest you try calling someone who deals with Jevco (such as John Duffy). Ask him, hypothetically speaking, how your premium would change if you had your license for one year as opposed to zero. also try getting a quote with State Farm (since they consider your car experience when rating you on a bike).

To answer some of your questions:

1.) The Safety Course will not lower your premium, but most insurers will REQUIRE it before they will even agree to accept you (especially for operators under 25yo).

2.) You rate will likely be quite high, especially in the first year. If you want to ride next year, you should consider doing a course and getting your M1/M2 this year -- that way, by next summer you will have already been licensed for a year (which will lower your premium with Jevco).

3.) There will probably be very little difference in the rate between any Ninja 250 from 2000 to present. Your insurance policy is expensive because it is covering your liability and your human parts, not a measly $3000 bike.

Good choice on a first bike -- you can't go wrong with a Ninja 250! Good luck.

you're looking at roughly 2500-3000 bucks. At 19, M1, clean record and 0 experience I paid 3500 bucks my first year then it dropped to 2200 the next year

I got a few quotes for a Ninja 250 and CBR 125. I'm a 23 y/o M, G1 since 16, held my G for almost 5 years.

SF: $150/mo for 125, $220/mo for 250
Jevco: $250/mo for 125, $280/mo for 250

I think I'll end up buying the CBR 125 and insuring with SF.

The quotes above are for full coverage. I'll probably drop the $300 for collision ($1000 deductible; the bike is only worth $2000...)

Just recently bought a Ninja 250 and I'm with SF. 24yrs old, 0 accidents/tickets, G for 5yrs, live in Brampton and I pay $200/m. My agent has told me that when I do turn 25 in Nov, my rate will go down to $70/m.

I'm 24, live in Bolton ON, no accidents or speeding tickets etc., have a 2009 Ninja 250R, and I pay $45/month for basic liability insurance with THE PERSONAL insurance company. I've been really happy with them except for the fact they can't do hypothetical quotes (how will my rate change when x happens, etc.) Try them out, I think I pay the least for insurance on this bike of anyone I've heard of.

Can't you just call them and give them your hypothetical info, asking for a quote? How are new customers supposed to get quotes then?

Basically you call em and tell em and give them your stats and what bike(s) you have or are looking to get and I'm sure they'll get you a quote.
But not if you list off 10 different ones, and say what if got a ticket, or 2 tickets and a suspension, or a D.U.I...etc.

Definitely give TD a shot, especially if you are still in school. With my university discount, I'm paying 1300 for liability only, 21 living in Brampton with zero convictions/accidents for a 2009 Ninja 250r.

Try State farm. I am 25 with no tickets or accidents on my record and currently pay $39 / month. I Started at around $130/month but as soon as I had one full season of riding experience and turned 25 my rates dropped substantially. Ninja250 as well....hoping for a new bike next season if money permits...... 13,000km's and going.

EDIT: I also have a discount since my car is with them as well, which contributed to the low rate.
