inline or v twin?

I agree with the above posters saying that you just have to try one to understand. For me it's a combo of the torque, powerband, feel, and sound that leave me only wanting a sport twin. I'm on my third now. I4's haven't ever been a consideration for me since the day I got my first one (1st gen SV650 followed by TL1000S and now KTM Superduke). No arguing that there are many fantastic I4 bikes out there but they're just not for me. Triumph's triples would be interesting to try one day.

Youre right, i didnt have it for too long. Two seasons. But thats cuz i didnt like riding it. It wasnt enjoyable unless you were pushing the limits, and that bikes limits were way above what would be considered legal or safe on the roads. The thing shone on the track ofcourse. There is zero enjoyment riding in second gear around town. I like to shift gears.

Theres a saying. Its more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.

Sounds like you really didn't know your 750 or have it for very long? In the City I rarely leave 2nd or 3rd gear. Works well for me.

Sorry, 140km/h....didnt realize that i had to be extremely precise to prove a point....in the end 140km/h or 160km/h is a moot point....the fact that to give the bike a bit of juice in ANY gear brings you instantly to HTA172 territory means that you're babying it everywhere....the beauty of the V-twins is that it has usable torque for those quick squirts of power that you can use everyday. Even sport touring oriented I4's have mid range torque that great. High strung sport bikes? Not so much...

The most fun street only bike i've ridden? Sv650...its a perfect combo of power, mid torque for street riding.

Doesnt the rc51 do 130km/hr in first gear?

I hope for your sake that an Emergency situation never arises and you find yourself putting along in fourth gear low in the powerband.
To that saying: I say ride your own ride.

Or even an SV650. I've done about 14k kms on mine and I really couldn't ask for anything better around town. You've got the torque down low where you need it, the easy manoeuvrability of a 600 to deal with city traffic, and there's really not that much around that will noticeably out accelerate it under 100Kph in city conditions. Let's be honest, if you're in the GTA and commuting, you'll spend most of your time under 100. If you still like the occasional speed though, I know for a fact that they'll top 223KPH indicated (no I won't say how).

Hey, for the money you save on getting a slightly older SV, you can even go add yourself a Nitrous system if you absolutely MUST satisfy periodic adrenaline cravings http://www.andysautosport.com/suzuki/2003_9999_sv650/performance/nitrous_oxide/

As for heating up, yes I can confirm that they will be a bit warmer on your legs and tank than an I4. My buddy Mike and I swapped bikes a few times during our trip to the Florida Keys (He's on a GSXR 600), and we both noticed the SV was warmer. Bike has no problem with it though, it'll idle in traffic for hours in the hot Florida sun without complaint. It's not like it'll cook you alive, but you'd notice a difference when swapping bikes mid-ride.

Have you considered a sv1000? I ride one. Love it. Was gonna trade on a r1 but declined. Too much for the street as already said. To wind it out.... Well, there aren't roads straight enough for that lol

I own a VTR 1000 currently. I have put 100,000 km on it so far.
I have loved every minute of every ride.
I have owned inline 4's and find them completely boring.
I have fixed and ridden my friends RC51 for a week. It is an amazing bike. I loved that thing way more than my VTR.
SV1000 is a de-tuned TLS. I owned a TLS and test rode an SV. I was very disappointing with it.

R1. Sure I would love to own one. But my license would only last a day.

Maybe a Ducati in my near future.

Agreed. Nothing tops the torque of a big V-twin sport bike.

It's not all about the numbers.
If you have never ridden a big bore v-twin. You would not know what it feels like to roll on the throttle.
Even my little 1979 Yamaha SR500 had a great feel for torque.

Ive owned two thanks.
Im just more of a realist. Roll ons?

CBR929RR ('00) , 3.37 3.08
RC51 ('00) 10/00, 4.94 5.34

Vtwins havent had that torque advantage in some time.

Like I said, it's not all about the numbers.
Although those numbers show that my VTR's 60 to 80 is only outdone by a CBR1000.

Im sure we can agree we would be doing a disservice to the OP by not making him aware of the facts.

Not to mention the VTR has a much more midrange biased powerplant than the RC51.

i have ridden a VTR and feels like a dog compared to the many r1s i have owned

That's a lotta R1's! What do you think of the 09+ crossplane's?

never ridden that one, but will in the next week or so as my buddy just bought a '10

they say they arent the fastest of the bunch for the litres, but they do sound unique and you can never beat a yamaha!

i had 2 inline4 SS, 750gsxr and a 1000gsxr, loved the power on the 1000... but i always had a soft spot for the tl1000r v-twin.. i was worried that it was gonna be too vibraty or slow.. yes it is a little bit of a downgrade from the 1000gixxer, but maaan, the tl1000r is just another world, turns heads everywere i go, so much comfier to ride for longer distances, sounds like god of thunder came for dinner and didnt like what was on the table
id say give v-twin a try
