Impaired Driving Penalty Changes

Finally something from Douggie that makes sense. Permanently affecting someone else's life because you committed a crime should result in permanent consequences for your life. I'd even be happy if they went further. Make the driver pay until they die and then take a portion of their estate. A permanent and lasting reminder of their bad choices in life.

The Ontario government says it's looking at new measures that would force impaired drivers to pay ongoing child support if they kill a child's parent or guardian.

I agree in principal, but I can see an argument where the DUI driver has an alcoholic disease and says you can't punish a person for being sick. Getting that mud to stick to the wall will take time.

I don't care about their disease, they can drink as much as they want/need to. There is no acceptable extension to driving while impaired. If that extension was reasonable, so is straight up murdering and blaming the disease.
 
Seems experts say alcoholism is a disease and a disorder.. a mental health issue. I`ve seen a lifetime of people with it, family and friends and so many others. I see it as you made a CHOICE to drink, you`re responsible if you kill someone. Just as Muzzo made a choice to drive and kill 4 people and be responsible for the kids father`s suicide too. They`re being given an easy excuse instead of personal responsibility, no amount of money will ever heal the grief of the Mom who`s life is destroyed by Muzzo. The drunk drivers should be jailed for life and their properties and holdings forfeited to the victims family. Good luck with that in this pathetically weak country run and inhabited by bleeding heart pushovers.
 
What about speeding? Driving the wrong way? Stopping on the highway? Being on your phone? Road rage? Crossing the HOV lane?
Why single out impaired driving?

DUI is more of a choice. It is easily avoided. It's a much longer duration of risk for the public. There is exceedingly high risk to reoffend. It has been proven to be statistically very dangerous. It often has horrendous outcomes. etc etc.

Minor speeding normally has a minor increase in crash severity.

Driving the wrong way on city streets is normally an annoyance/minor crash. Driving the wrong way on the highway is almost always a DUI or severe mental impairment that should result in never driving again (eg dementia).

Stopping in a live lane is normally a momentary brain fart. I don't know of anyone that does that often. Normally it is a moment of panic and the driver is the most stressed in the situation.

Phone use may be reasonable to lump in with DUI as it has proven to be similar impairment level, choice to avoid, duration of risk, etc.

Road rage can be a momentary choice. I'm ok with the huge hammer being used if you do it more than once as the outcomes can be horrendous and it's completely unnecessary. It's also much harder to define. If someone cuts you off and you lay on your horn and they crash, was that road rage by you? They line is very wide and very grey.

Crossing the HOV lane is interesting. There are a lot of people that completely ignore the line. I would be fine with them getting a mark on their license that fully restricts them from ever using an HOV lane in any circumstance. ALPR would make it easy to catch them and use a hammer that hurts.

I 100% agree and support such a fine / penalty for killing a parent of a child. But what if someone kills the child? Or someone without dependents? The penalty should be the same.

Unfortunately with such a hard penalty, I fear it will just cause more people to run after an accident as that’s a very heavy stick (which I agree with).

Make the stick for running double or triple that of the actual DUI and then we may see less hit and runs by drunks.
 
Sadly will have little to no affect.
Just a new batch of businesses to help the perpetrator fight it.

I did a short search and found a number of diseases that require quarantine / isolation of the infected based on the potential of the disease harming others. Enforcement is a fuzzy situation based on attitudes of various health boards. Remember that Covid restrictions were set provincially.

Quarantine / isolation for smallpox, Ebola, measles, TB, SARS, many more.

People with epilepsy and some other conditions can be banned from driving. Certain heart conditions can pull a license.
 
I agree with the new support fines/penalties.. but it probably won’t hold up when it’s challenged. Our courts don’t like minimum and/or mandatory sentences.
 
I agree the penalties should be more then they are now, not just DUI but other related vehicle issues. How about taking their license away, like permanently. And the only way to get it again is to go through driver training again etc.
