We've had good luck with AirBnB and there are spots all over the world. We had a lovely spot 100 meters from the Guggenheim in Bilbao Spain. $47 Canadian with a good breakfast.

Now there are lots of low cost motels as well - post them up.

Thanks MacDoc. I forgot all about Airbnb. Friends of ours use it all the time and love it. We're heading out to do the Superior loop, not sure how much help it will be but we'll have to check it out.

Cheers

Matt - how secure are the hostels? Do you have your own room - any age restrictions or other things riders should know about?

I've routinely used HiHostels in Mont-Tremblant, SanFran, and Montreal; There's no age restrictions, as a lot of people in there tend to be students. If security worries you, you can rent a locker for $5 for the duration of your stay (I think it's $10, w/ $5 security deposit for the lock itself). I've always just locked high-value stuff in my car, or left them in a bag under my bed while I slept.

At some locations you can get a shared room (bunk-bed in a room with 4 beds), or you can get a private room for a little bit more (in Tremblant I think a bed in a shared room was $22/night, and a private room was $40/night - amazing rates.

Shared, dorm-style washrooms & showers, and a large, fully equipped shared kitchen. You can get/bring your own groceries, and they give you a basket with your room # to keep your food in.

People generally tend to not steal stuff, because everyone in there is relatively vulnerable.

I use Airbnb all the time. I actually use it BEFORE I even look at hotels. I much prefer staying in an apartment / house over a hotel. On my 6 week trip to Europe recently I stayed in 7 Airbnb listings and all were great.

If you prefer to stay in hostels, then you can rent private rooms as well.

I'd highly recommend it.
