I Almost Got Killed By A Turtle Crossing The Highway

That's pretty stupid, knowingly hitting anything on the road. Thought it was a paper bag, but didn't know what was in the bag. That's some fine foolish riding.

Subject should be: "I Almost Got Killed Myself Hitting A Turtle Crossing The Highway"

So no one in your super-duper excellent group pointed on the road to tell other riders in the group that there is a problem on the pavement?

I was curious if anyone in his group looked like this

da

even if it was a paper bag you don't know what's in it and other riders apparently with better vision went around it....or were you fixated?

Don't run over anything if you can avoid it....even sheets of paper can land wrapped around your head and then you have no vision.

The instructure is correct for squeeze toys like squirrels ....I've hit a small raccoon and it just went crunch but you could have avoided and it's very fortunate you did not hurt another rider.

Lesson learned we hope...

You weren't almost killed by a turtle....you were almost injured by not exercising good judgement......usually the case.
Wonder if the turtle survived....poor kid behind had a good reason to play pale face.

+1 there was a full can of pop and a bill for his new faring in the bag my buddy hit last year(someones lunch i guess)

If a paper bag does not flutter and move due to the wind from passing vehicles you should note that it is weighted down and is not empty. If you have time you should avoid it.

Your riding buddies should have pointed it out to you. Thankfully your Filip friend still has his head. Turtle shells are like rock. I'm sure the turtle is still ok, with probably a chipped shell. They are pretty tough. BTW the turtle in the photo looks like a midland painted turtle. If you post up a closeup I could identify the species. Irregardless of species please do not run these animals over. They are innocent.

I did not think that turtles could teach rider education. You proved me wrong.

I'm always seeing crushed turtles on the road... No idea how it happens when they are so dang easy to avoid.
Do you also hit pot holes/tar snakes etc just because they are in your riding path? This unkown object should have been avoided. I even avoid manhole covers, just because.

And if the little bump from a little turtle almost caused you to crash, you need to learn how to ride. 100km/hr isn't that fast, it shouldn't be too hard to avoid things at that speed.

I have mentioned to friends many times in the past that you have to watch out for turtles They have a way of sneaking out and if hit a certain way can flip a bike.

I don't think that I would ever purposly hit anything on the road if i could safely avoid it.

I suspect that from the details of the action, tripping up one rider and almost decapitating another this was a Clemmys guttata

subspecies - the rare Ninja variant.

It was breaking cover from it's normally well concealed position and you messed with the mission.
