How old is old when buying helmet

I am looking to get a helmet as my current helmet is more than 7 years old. I have decided what helmet I want (S3) however checking GP bikes in store they have only 1 in display and other one in the "back" is from 2024. My second choice for helmet had sticker dated October 2025. Considering recommended lifetime of helmet is 7 years (max) what's your take on how old is considered old when buying brand new helmet in store. I don't even see this option (date of manufacture) mentioned in online store like fortnine or revzilla. Most people recommend not to buy helmet online.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

If it's been in a controlled environment and the price is reasonable, I'm ok with a few years old NIB. <3 years of storage and 7years useful life before replacement doesn't seem terrible to me.

For online, it's a crapshoot. I have never seen a store list DOM. Occasionally, you can take an educated guess due to changes in colorways.

Our race helmets are allowed up to 6 years. And that's with a lot of on/off and sweating in them. I'd have no problem buying a 2/3 years old "new" helmet that's been in a controlled environment for the street, so long as it is discounted. Would skip it for the track just because half it's "legal" life is gone.
So long as I don't crash, I usually take my old race helmets and use them on the street. Then when they start to show signs of wear, they become my parking lot instructing helmets.

The crashed ones are on display in my kitchen.

Sun's UV is likely the biggest threat to helmet life. I'd be ok with a 10 year old helmet if it was new in a box.

It’s an astute observation when considering how much money spent on equipment to protect the important parts of our body.

As for the likes of me, it’s really a matter of which helmets I should retire as accumulating them along with everything else seems to be more of an issue. Have I checked some of my favourites to see if they are out of date? Not really. Will that give me an excuse to get rid of some and acquire replacements? Most definitely!

If I’m spending a large sum, the helmet should be within 12 months from the date of purchase.

Unrelated but, made me realize the importance of manufacture date and life expectancy. I used to baulk at tire replacement dates but, definitely notice tires with excellent tread depth and minimal wear have dry rot and cracking. Manufacturers are developing and using materials that deteriorate noticeably over time. Stuff back in the days I was made, doesn’t seem to age the same way. 🤷‍♂️. Jokes folks.

1. Yes, do not buy a helmet online. (sorry, I know it's easy).
2. "Stale dating" helmets is kinda bullshitty when they are kept well. In your case the helmet has probably never seen a UV ray, has never absorbed sweat, it probably still has the sticker sealing the box and another across the visor.
3. GP is well aware of people wanting to replace helmets every 5 years. I would negotiate a discount on it if it's from 2024. Not because it is less safe, but rather because they are having a hard time selling it, and it will get even harder the longer it sits.

I recently bought a helmet (not from GP) that was 3 years old. Sealed box, never seen the daylight. It was on "sale" but wasn't moving off the shelf. I asked the manager to see if he could do something on the price. I got it for just under 75% off. And I love it.
