No one's pointed out that the 500 is piss ugly and would cost more to insure. 300 is a better bike performance wise and a few comparisons have made that point too. Only thing the Honda has on the kawi is build quality.

I have to say the Ninja 300 build and finish quality is impressive. Honda is using heavier, cheaper (more reliable?)components.
The CBR500 has larger ergonomics. They are going for the crowd that commutes and is looking for a reliable sporty ride without feeling like they are too big for the bike. That torque in the lower revs makes all the difference.
HP is a fake number that means nothing, and is just used for marketing, the torque charts tell a very different story, you really have to wring that 300 to get that power. Yeah, 430lbs is lardy, but likely better on the highway.

This really clarifies things for me! The CBR and Ninja 300 are almost opposite bikes - in terms of engine performance. I see the commuter intent now of the CBR. Easy to ride and its power always available. Whereas the Ninja 300 is more intended to be a true sport (track) bike.
This is great to know, and wonderful we have these options available to us.
It appears there is no real winner here; it's more a question of what do you want from your bike/what you'll be doing with it.

I was pretty sure the Ninja 300 was going to be my first bike - now I'm positive. Ultimately I want to track-ride on an SS, and the 300 emulates more of the characteristics of these bikes. I'll be learning all the basics on this bike, so its lighter weight is a huge plus. Then I'll take her to the track for a year-or-two.
That's the plan anyway!

Read the post again. The question is whether it is better to pay $6300++ for a 300, or pay more insurance on a good used 600.
Motorcycling is much bigger in the UK, and they usually get the first models.

Exactly. If price difference isn't that much, I'd definitely choose this newer cbr300r based on looks alone. I'm not a fan of the 2013 styling.
The OP's original post was regarding rumors about a cbr300 replacing the cbr250 and some reliable info. Seems that there hasn't been anything concrete regarding the CBR300. Lots of rumors/pictures of a new version of the rz350 for years, but has never materialized.
The UK has announced a release for the cbr300 but North American hasn't yet. So, it looks like Honda is putting out a direct competitor to the Kawasaki ninja300.
Oh, okay, I get it. Not rumours, though, Honda announced the CBR300R in October. No word yet if it will make it to these shores, however.

Strictly speaking about the costs, you might be right. Looking around for the right bike; it’d be close. However, I don’t want to start on a 600. I know I won’t be making the best financial decision. Thanks for looking out for my best interest and giving me things to consider.
