You mention on the "shell" of a helmet. Is that specific wording found in the HTA? The reason I ask is I have my gorpo mounted to mx helmet on the bottom of the removable sun visor. I would think that the sun visor is not considered the "shell" of the helmet. Anyone have any thoughts?
 
Yes it is specific to the shell. The issue is they have ruled attaching anything to the shell negates the safety certification of the helmet. The charge is failing to wear a proper helmet.

Don't think it would apply to mounting on the visor. But may also depend on how secure it is attached. They may try to argue in a collision the camera could detach and become a projectile.

Can you provide a link to this? I can't seem to find one.....trying to research which camera I want and the how to mount it will impact which one I buy....

It's not so much a comment in the law about attachments to the helmet, as it is a requirement that the helmet have a "smooth shell." Case law has determined that attachments to the helmet cause it to not meat that requirement.

I would presume that a visor would be considered part of the helmet's shell.
 
I still think that Judge made an error. He should have spent less time flipping through the dictionary and looked at the actual words in the regulation. Attaching something to the helmet doesn't make shell not smooth. What about the vents and visor? All protrusions that interrupt the smooth surface of the shell. Adding an adhesive mount doesn't change the shell in any way. The mount does not become part of the shell. IMHO.
 
It does say that headphones may not be used for music but can be used for communication. Those systems mount to the exterior of some helmets too. Does that make them illegal as well? Just trying to figure this out!!

Don't forget to ask people on rides you go with if it is ok for you to record and post the ride, I will be royally ****** if you posted a video of me riding on the internet with my license plate etc

No it doesn't... It says nothing about headphones in the HTA. And yes, those "communication" devices are illegal if they are mounted on the outside of the helmet.

The JP/judge made the judgment based on the intent of the law which is to keep a helmet smooth, so that you don't have it catch and snap your neck in a crash. It's actually how the law should work, rather than Perry Masoning each and every individual word.

What is your opinion on the legality of goggles Rob?

Mine is that as the strap that goes behind the helmet protrudes less than 5mm it is in compliance.

So you are one of those people, it is a matter of courtesy, you are not randomly recording people on the street, you are recording people from a forum you frequent and should have the courtesy to ask. People like you are the reason I don't post public rides anymore.

This is why many of us hate the whole craze with cameras. As pointed out some random guy films me doing something else then so be it. Going on a ride with others and someone doesn't tell me and does it anyways equals dick move. Common courtesy and respect aren't really that lost these days are they? Not everyone wants to end up being filmed. If you would at least say "hey I have a xyz camera and I'm going to film" I could then decide to stay riding behind you. This is why many of us don't go on a lot of group rides with people not in our circle.

In such a situation I would ask the officer if he had calibrated or verified the camera as a device used to visually measure time. Odds are his answer would have the case kicked out.
 
Here's what I don't get. Why don't people stick the damn things on said vehicle in an inconspicuous location. Why does it always have to be somewhere that screams "look at me I'm the monkey with a go pro officer" out of sight out of mind. I guess that's too extraordinary a concept. :rolleyes:

lol I am a Canadian Citizen that plans not to step foot in that country until democracy is reinstated, their police is none of my concern, I am more worried about OPP than Venezuelan police :)

I just find people these days need to remember their rights finish when someone else's start.

And forgetting about all the legalities and the amount of crap someone can get by someone else recording them, what about being decent and courteous and a respectful person? and stop being an ******* towards everyone just because you want to show you videos on youtube and show how cool you are!

It has a laser level, but on a helmet, it's a bit more complicated than just setting the helmet on a table and leveling from there. I find that I tilt my head a lot for no reason. (Another argument for mounting the camera on the bike.)
