Helmet Cams

Don't know if you were in my thread just a sec ago but there are lots of choices of equipment and options for where to place them.

Cams- GoPro, Contour, Drift, Pivothead
Audio- External 3.5mm adapter for gopro as they don't offer one, contour offers one, not sure about drift, pivothead has it built in and since no wind gets in closed helmet, it works great. A lot of them can be fitted with adapters so just find what's comfortable

Google and the search button work wonders....... :D

I got a used Contour Roam 2 for $130. Basic functionality but it works fine and the video quality is good (in daylight.)

It came with a curved adhesive mount:

BTW sound is garbage. The mic hole is inexplicably facing forward. It just picks up wind. I shall try to put a bit of duct tape over it.

No external mic jack on the Roam.

Sound is perfectly fine as long as you're not moving.

Here's a sample vid - keys flew out of my worn-down ignition switch during that ride. :-?

with or without external microphone?

I know the contour 1080P you have to rip it open and solder a external microphone in..... Not sure about the other ones.

Matt Rain: Tape won't work lol, I have tried everything from tape to caulking on all the openings around the microphone, I saw a post on someone opening it up and wrapping the microphone with insulation and it worked wonders.

For Contour, try putting on something fuzzy around the mic hole.
I just bought some fuzzy succeed animal and one of those sticky tack from dollar store. Sacrifice it to Satan by cutting the fur a little smaller than a stamp with smaller opening for mic inside. Use the sticky tack thing to attach around the mic hole and it is better.

^ looks funny but it kinda mimics professional sound recording mics. It didn't come off while I was riding at speed.

if you use the adhesive mount, arn't you stuck with the mount on your helmet until you decide to buy a new one?

I don't mind the look of yours..but im just saying...

Anyone try this camera? It's a bit cheaper than the gopro or contour. http://replayxd.com/

From what I've heard, its better than GoPro3 at night but doesn't compare to the wide angle or sharper imaging of the GoPro3 and the GoPro3+ has even wider, sharper angles and is the smallest/lightest out there (and 40% longer battery life) than the GoPro3 but not the lowest drag coefficient. (Because that's really important lol) Not including the PivotHead which remain in the helmet and no muffled audio or uncomfortable mouth against your ear/cheek.

GoPro3+ is the best out there but for the money with all of its amenities but its subjective whether you want something else as a lot of monitors/TVs cant play 4K resolution and not everyone needs the Wi-Fi.

Checking out the Replay XD1080 Mini, it looks smaller, lighter and better drag coefficient.

all are around $200 USD I think

Better off with double sided tape that way if you ever want to remove it, you just rub a solvent on it.

I'm the slightly-ashamed owner of 6 helmets. But yeah, I made a conscious decision to mount it on this one for good.

What do you think is on the back of the adhesive mount......

Or were you just planning on double sided taping the camera directly to your helmet.....

Anyone happened to yet get a ticket for having camera on their helmet?
Someone in BC did but they fought it and won. There is no laws against it but cops just don't want evidence of themselves making a mistake or abusing power. There is something of a law about you cant have something that ruins the structural integrity of the helmet (such as using electric saw to create air holes or for a place to put feathers like the guys in Mad Max)
