Hey guys,

Thanks for adding me to this forum! I am an American rider who has been riding for the last 7 years and I am interested in expanding my riding across international borders. I have done a few rides in Europe but want to do more in North America. I have ridden as far north as Chicago, IL and have wanted to plan a trip up to Canada for a future ride.

I am here to learn about bikes and other motorcyclists experiences. Do many of you travel to the states for big rides?

Nick

Some of us do.

This past Aug/Sept went from east of Toronto to the Black Hills, SD (via the Soo), thru Beartooth Pass up to
Edmonton, AB (co-rider's family-got to go for a ride in a Leopard tank!). Then across the Icefield Parkway (Banff, etc,) past Duffy Lake and Whistler down to Vancouver. From there across the south side of BC, down thru Idaho into Montana for the Ride to the Sun, and then a mostly boring ride across the north side of the States to home.

2 oldish riders on 2 newish bikes.
34 days (2 not riding, and only 5 days of rain). 12,700 km or 8500 miles.

IMHO - qualifies for a big ride.

welcome
most of my multi-day trips have been in the US

lots of interesting places and roadways in Canada
and also lots of very boring miles between these places

so I usually head south and stay away from cities
lots of fantastic scenery on secondary highways
lots of affordable acoms, food and gas

you don't say where you're from, other than being south of Chicago
very cool city, but I can't think of a moto destination being less suitable

let us know where you are and you'll get some suggestion for tours in Canada

G'day Nick
What are your interests, fishing, riding, camping, cutting firewood, boating, bird watching, other?

Yes, been all over the U.S. Canada is best in June, July and August. A few Americans on this site, mostly from upstate NY. Great trip for you would be through B.C. to Yukon, Alaska or Northwest Territories - a true adventure. Then there's Nova Scotia, and the Cabot Trail. Anyway, lots to see in the free North.

I live south, in Texas. Chicago was not the best place to ride but lots of farm roads outside of the city that are enjoyable!

I took a 4 week trip down your way last year
made it down to the Gulf coast and stayed in South Padre Island to take a nice break
I really like the South, the hospitality and service are second to none

so you've got what, 4-5 days riding to get to Canada?
coming that far your options are wide open

the west coast is fantastic, southern interior of BC is my favorite part of Canada
and the roads north through the Rockies are incredible

east of there is pretty flat - most of Alberta, Saskatoon and Manitoba are prairies
some nice spots and great people, but a lot of straight/flat/boring roads

some nice riding around the Great Lakes region on both sides of the border
you could cross into Canada north of Duluth MN and go across the top of the lakes
from there you can head south into the populated part of Ontario
nice area but really not a lot of great riding
you'd be better off to stay north and head east into Quebec
cities are generally not great riding destinations but I'd make Quebec City an exception
park the bike for a day or two and forget that you are in NA

next option is the Maritimes - east coast of Canada
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI.....nice area and great people
at the top of Nova Scotia is Cape Breton Island....fantastic ride
if you're ever been to Scotland, you'll appreciate how the place got it's name

Newfoundland - a trip in itself - lengthy ferry ride
lots to see and a very distinct part of NA

the Maritimes are best accessed from the south through Maine
but that means for you, riding through Yankee heartland :)
