Has this ever happened to other riders?

I'm riding home on the 401 westbound in the middle lane just before Hurontario. It's 3 lanes there with the far right lane ending and three lanes merging down to two lanes.

I notice the semi truck that's been behind me for quite a while suddenly straddle the lane behind me and the right lane that's about to disappear. He took up the two lanes for at least 1 km.

What was his intention? Did he want to make a lane change into the right lane but didn't notice that it was ending? Was he blocking other cars from zooming past and cutting in at the last minute? Or was he protecting my behind?

Just curious.
 
Most likely he just wanted to prevent cars from cutting in at the last minute. Happened to me in the cage on the way home from Niagara today.

QEW EB has 2 sections near Grimsby where they shut the highway down to one lane....traffic there is horrid.
 
I actually prefer a semi or a bus taking up two lanes when the lanes merge, far too often i see people just going to the lane that's ending because its shorter and budding everyone while fully knowing that it ends.
 
I'll admit to doing this sometimes (blocking the very end of an ending lane) in my car as well, but only when it's bumper to bumper and that lane has already began to narrow so much no car could properly fit in it anyways. Honestly I don't understand the people who like to advance so far up those lanes they actually merge from the shoulder (all to get maybe 10ft closer to their destination).

To make matters worse, 9 times out of 10 when they do this there isn't enough room for their car either, so everyone behind has to stay stopped so they can fit the remaining 90% of their car into the actual lane.

He could have been doing it because he can and always does or you could take it as he noticed you and realized the people behind him might try to scoot around him and cut into the open spot (Where you are), so he was just helping out.
 
Our merging lanes or on ramps whatever we call them are very long and give enough time for cars to get up to speed to merge safely. Yet everyday I see bozos not up to speed. Everyone should have to learn to drive in europe, especially Germany. On ramps are really short and you better be up to speed and not screwing around otherwise you will hear about it lol
Cars are generally smaller with less hp out there and I never felt so safe driving on highways in my life. Very organized. We can learn alot from those germans.

Anyway rant over. Either the truck was protecting you or he was becoming sleepy lol

I tend to think the latter. People see a big truck and think "let me just scoot around before this lane ends" and whoops! There's a bike. I keep a good space when I'm in front of a bus for the same reason. People speed up just to get ahead of the bus before the next light and nearly take me out trying to dive back in front.
 
Nah, most definitely, he wasn't protecting your "behind" :D

I try my hardest in my jeep or Dakota and neither of them can get up to speed fast enough on the queen to 410 south on ramp. However I do get exactly what you're saying for newer cars. Just the other day I merged behind a new car (post 2000) at around 70km/h.
