I still think it is. Some people adapt to new cultures better than others but in Taiwan and China, haggling is encouraged even at retail stores. I'd imagine it's the same for India and other Middle Eastern countries.

It's not like we can walk into Best Buy and haggle....can we? lol

Yup, works the same way in other middle eastern countries.
Saving money isnt a crime

Another member with no shame.

I was selling a mint, complete bodywork set for champions edition R6 around 10 years ago and was asking $2200. I had dropped it to $2000 bucks after 4 months and negotiated with a GTAM member that I'd settle for $1800. The buyer would be coming from Oshawa to my home in Richmond Hill. On his way over he gave me a call to let me know he was on his way. I confirmed with him the deal was for $1800, and he confirmed. He shows up an hour later at my home, looks at the bodywork and flashes $1400 at me... tells me the ATM at the bank wouldn't let him withdrawal anymore, and that he was leaving for Hungary tomorrow.

I asked him to leave, and he looked surprised that his pressuring/bullying tactics didn't work. Fortunately in this case, he wasted his own time and gas money to meet me.

3 months later I got a legit buyer who was referred to me by someone behind the counter of a dealership (who had seen my post on GTAM). The guy showed up at my place the same day he called, and handed me $2200 in cash! $400 more than I was asking at that point. He was so thrilled to get such a good deal after being quoted $6000 from the dealer.

Good things come to those who wait and stand their ground. There's all kinds out there, and GTAM is no exception.

Actually, you can. I was buying a 52" Samsung TV and I simply asked the salesman if he can do any better on the price. He took something like $45 off.

Kijiji isn't best buy. Its not uncommon for sellers to overestimate the value of their items for sale which necessitates haggling to reach a deal mutually agreeable to both parties.

I don't think haggling is the problem as much as lowballing, or people just generally acting like complete ******** when it comes to transacting online. Every race and culture has ********.

.

That's an old trick, sort of a bait and switch variant. They figure you're so primed for the sale you'll go for it.

I'm usually not a haggler. I'll ask if there is any flex in the price but I don't haggle over the phone. Come and see it with cash in hand and we'll talk and adjust for condition. "Firm" has been overused so doesn't mean much any more. Just like "Brand new, only used twice."

A buddy saw a power tool at a garage sale and negotiated to half price but didn't have the cash with him so left a deposit and came back later. The seller had sold it for full price and returned the deposit. Mixed feelings on that one as buddy had really hammered the price down then couldn't immediately back it up.

I have a restored wooden boat for sale. A guy from the Muskokas was interested but had been disappointed from other inaccurate descriptions. It sounded like he wanted me to take the boat up there for him to give it the once over. No thanks, your history is your problem.

AND PLEASE

Buy a map or learn how to use Google Maps. I get tired of spelling every street name over twice and describing every landmark on your trip to my place while you search for a pen that you then find is out of ink, all while your phone almost puts out enough static to drown out the screaming brats that you intend to bring with you on this family adventure.

I've only had a few dealings with GTAM members over items but never any real issue. All items were as described, and when I'm buying something I'm always the one that would go to where the item is....never even crossed my mind to ask the seller to bring an item to me.

One deal didn't go through was a jacket with a member here but the only reason was that it didn't fit. Otherwise I would've taken it as it was as described and for a good price. But I drove from Etobicoke to Scarborough to see it instead of asking him to come and bring it to show it to me.

Although I don't understand the mentality of 'no haggling' once you go see the item and setting a price prior to going and seeing an item. I wouldn't even bother talking price of the item until I physically see it and check the condition...but that's just me. As mentioned 'firm', 'brand new', 'barely used' are all bullcrap from sellers on craigslist, ebay, kijiji, and everywhere else so I don't even pay attention when anyone says that.

Cuteblackfox - I am selling my ninja 250 she came to see it, said she would buy it, then asked to have it saftied and delivered.
Got the bike saftied and was willing to deliver two hours away for 100 bucks gas, held the bike for two weeks while I had many replies on my ad that I ignored and then never replied back.

I would have been up front to Cuteblackfox and tell them I'd be happy to safety and deliver but, a decent deposit required or pay in full at time of the agreement.

Otherwise, I would entertained the other replies and sold it if someone had the cash.

Yeah I learned my lesson, but at least it's saftied and ready for a buyer so hopefully it sells soon!

The only time i'd do a payment plan is over the winter time and I keep the bike until payment is made in full. Non-refundable until I sold it in the spring.

I could see that but with some people that would still be asking for drama.

I'd set the contract up. Signed including witness. Get a lawyer to notarize it (added into price). This way if things go south you'd be protected. I'm a pretty easy going guy and willing to help out, but at the end of the day don't screw with me.

If you don't have the cash to play, no dice. Deposit to hold onto a mutual agreed time for the balance to be paid.

I've been a landlord and dealt with many people over the years. A lot of folks express their best intention at time of purchase or agreement or what ever. Only to get buyers remorse or change their mind. Sometimes it from outside influences such as family, friends or circumstances. I'm not a counselor or bar tender. I've known some people that may not present well but have the utmost integrity and others that present themselves very well only to be totally lame.

One thing I've learned? If you can get burned, you likely will. So, don't put yourself in the position to get burned. Trust is earned, never assumed.

same, I offered a friend I work with payment plan, ended up he had some other things come up, didn't end up with a bike at all. Very few people would get that offer

Sounds like you didn't really discuss price at all in your correspondence which, to a normal person, would mean you are getting asking. However, in Internet-sales-land, that means he will offer you whatever he wants.

However, in my experience, even after you decide on a price he will likely try to low ball you. People suck, in general.

The best it goes like:
"Oh so I know we agreed on $??? but I only have $?? on me. Is that ok?"
"No."
"Oh look, turns out I have $??? after all."
