GTAM Member review/feedback

I have a ghetto story from about 20-plus years ago where the young guy (me) had to burn el cheapo oldster....so, a guy owed me 30 bucks (lol) and gave me an old heap of a skidoo for payment. So I list in the simcoe shopper for the aforementioned 30 bucks firm, and listed it as a heap but complete for parts (it was). Old dude shows up in a mini van (no way to even bring it home) and starts going through the machine, wanting to hear it run, asking why the carb was laying on the seat, etc. This was a THIRTY DOLLAR SNOWMOBILE!! Anyway, I laughed and said straight to his face that I was going to find someone to give it away to, and he could kiss my *** for being such a goof. He was none too impressed, lol. If you have to haggle over five or ten bucks, you should ****ing hang.

It seems to be a generational thing. They don't want to work but they want to be a millionaire by Friday! Unless I see "obo" I assume the price is firm and act accordingly.

for sure. I had wankers offer me $300 for a surface pro 128GB I had for sale for $500 Firm. I sold it to a nice lady the other day for my asking price. Actually, I could have sold it 5 times over.. there was a lot of interest. Interesting that the people from the North West end or northern end of the city were the fricken low ballers and I could tell younger (Under 25yrs).

Oh man I forgot about the Simcoe Shopper. It's been well over a decade since I've even had a thought about it. I looked forward to each new one every time going to the store! Made great reading material. Was sort of like the internet, before the internet.

Thanks for making me remember enjoyable memories that were invisible to the conscious part of my brain! (<--- kind of neat itself!)

he could have asked you to pay him to take your fridge ;-) (assuming he was taking your fridge lol)

I didn't take his fridge, he didn't take my fridge. I was the hapless bystander roped in. 2 hrs. of my time because he didn't have the foresight to remove any doors, couldn't find the tools yadda. My buddy helped another guy move a lathe last week as well. Is $75 ok? We had a good cry about that today. Try do a good turn still get burned.

I purchased and sold a few things to members on his forum, never had an issue. Recently (a week ago) I purchased a hitch from Kellen, didn't even bother to offer him less then he was asking. Drove out to his location (2.5 hours away) and had a perfectly smooth transaction, he even showed me how to install it, and how to hook up the wiring for it, heck he even closed my cars hatch or me. Hopefully I never run into the situation above, I'd be royally ******.

Will check my class this w/e for any GTAM members :p

I told him i can meet him tomorrow in the city, i live in oshawa

He said he needs it for his MSF course today. If i can bring it to him

He said 70
I said no

Mistake number 1. Let the customer come to you. Then you know he is serious.

Mistake number 2. You should have accepted the $70 and moved on. Now you are still stuck with a jacket you probably don't want, and will likely waste even more time and energy trying to get rid of it. My time, effort and gas is worth a lot more to me than an extra 5 dollars for an item I don't really want anymore anyways.

You got "played", plain and simple.

I'm tempted to buy it for 75 just out of respect for the fact that he didn't take crap from some hand-job that needs to haggle over 5 bucks. And I don't even need a jacket.

...and it goes both ways. I rode out to Stoney Creek yesterday from downtown, having arranged to buy pants from a guy in Oakville and boots from a dude in Mississauga on my way home. Pants guys agrees on a price - I let him set it and I thought it was fair. He texts me his address and I tell him I'm on my way. Then he texts me back a few minutes later and tells me sorry, they're sold. F'er. I wanted to ride by his place and give him a piece of my mind but that would have went bad for me no matter what. The pants were sold.

So what? There's no honour anymore? I could see if I didn't respond and left him hanging, but he gave me his address because he know I was on my way.

Boots guy was better. Again we had agreed on a price - $30 below asking, I showed up at his place and all was good. He knew they had to fit to make the deal work, and now we're both happy.

Thanks CBC. I needed to vent because this was actually yesterday, and I was ******. No honour anymore. It's the third time a Kijiji guy had made a deal and then burned me. Luckily the 10 other times were good.

450Khan: you should crawl to his door with 75 bucks in your teeth. Don't say anything - the humility will be your apology. Just take your jacket and go.

My favorite is when someone like the buyer asks for a price - you give it to them.....they ask for your last price (adding they'll pay in cash)...then when you do settle,on a price they drop the 'can you drive out to see me' - Hell no bra!
...and yup it's the younger ones pulling this.
..and what your gonna pay me in cookies?

Ding! You nailed it...

I got screwed on a recent transaction to get a replacement left side cover for my bike. I have a few more oars in the water so my bike will be whole again...

I don't mind haggling. Just do it before we meet! I got some A* SMX-5 a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier with the boots or the transaction with a fellow G.T.A. member.

I have had great luck buying and selling with fellow G.T.A. members.

I advertise something for $400...and I price reasonably well to move the item.... lowballers.. always say "$300 cash and i come now...."

what else are they going to pay me with? Magic ****en beans?

btw.. shameless plug... i have some brand new joe rocket pants for sale... see the gtam classifieds ;-)

Maybe I'm just old school or it's the way I was brought up but when somebody asks for $xxx that's the price.

Funny this should come up. Last night I called a kijiji ad for a lawn mower, guy says $150 firm. No problem, get his address and head over. I arrive at his house and the owner is arguing with another guy. Turns out the other guy had made a deal for $130 and while he was on his way to pick it up, the owner made a deal with me for $150. It was a great lawn mower, but I told the owner he was a low life and walked away. The other buyer had driven 45 minutes to get there only to find out the seller was a dick.

It seems to me the moral of this thread is to beat your kids

Don't even get me started on some of the numbnuts I've dealt with.....its the reason why I refuse to travel for a sale.

I would have set the thing on fire out of spite if i got jerked around like that.

Yup, old school. I bet you also think a handshake is as good as a contract, and someone's word is their bond. I wish we could go back.

I bet he's still sitting on that lawn mower. Tell me where he was and i'll go offer him $100 for it.

This is why I asked for shipping or just to ebay. There's a few times while on route even talking to the guy beforehand 'yea i'll be there in 30 minutes'. I get a text saying it's sold....

My last purchase was a pair of knee guards from gp bikes. I know there's a set in the classified section. Didn't even bother asking. Sure I could've saved $60, but the hassle.

Not everyone is bad it's just using things like kijiji seems to being put all the retards. Some of us still stand by our word although that's rare these days especially in the gta
