GSX-S or Drz 400sm?

What would you think would make it cheap to insure? A 900cc triple is big motor in any insurance company's eyes, no?

Wonder what real-world rates are for this bike.

Same price as my current FZ1 as it in the same cc bracket. Cheap, about $500/yr.

Tubular handlebars=cheap insurance

Exactly!! i just got a quote.. $470 for the year! yeeeeah!

I presume you guys don't live downtown? That's about what I pay for my 125 and it's 1/3 what I paid on my 650R.

Hopefully that applies when I get the renewal on my Fazer 8. I'd heard they were lumping bikes like that into the "sport bike" genre and figured the wheelie-happy FZ09 and FZ1 (and FZ8 for that matter) would be penalized hard.

i've owned my wheelie machine for about a year now. I use the drz for everything, commuter and hooligan riding. the stock DRZ may be a little under powered but that is fixable. you would need a full exhaust and a FCR 39mm carb and a beast is born. i have lots of sports bike rider friends that have rode my bike and since switched over to the supermoto platform. supermotos in general add a whole new level of adventure that a sports bike simply can not achieve, for example we literally can go any where without limit, any dirt road , back ally, curbs, forest , trails, etc...

if your looking for a bike that you just want to go fast in a straight line... sure buy a Gsx-s, but if you want to have a adventure, buy the DRZ400SM, you will thank me later.

Ride Safe :)

How often do you go offloading with it?

Decided on the fz-09...perfect mix of both bikes and will not have to invest more money like I would have into the drz to make it faster.

i highly suggest ridding both bikes if given the chance. but good luck.

I am coming from an R1 , the drz is gonna feel like a pig... the fz at least has some balls.

I don't think "AJAXguy" lives downtown. :P

consider the Ducati/triumph Scrambler. they a good bike with power and still have off road capability. if you like the styling that is.

Or better yet, go with the XSR900. It's an FZ09 that looks like a Scrambler, has resolved the fueling issues, comes with traction control, ABS and a slipper clutch (which the FZ09 doesn't) for a small amount more.

The drz is a great bike for its class. You are going to love the fz, it's likely a whole lot more of what you're looking for. That triple is killer.

Triumph Scrambler weighs well over 500lbs, has less than 60hp and about as much off road capability as the generic vintage UJM. The styling is a toss up but I'm sure a bloated Steve McQueen would be all over it.

DR-Z will be more fun but I wouldn't buy one new. There has been no updates to the bike since it was brought out other than colours. It'll be incredibly underpowered compared to what you're used to. They can be fun with big bore kit and associated parts but they are pretty gutless in stock trim. It's not very comfortable for long rides and buzzy at highway speed. However, they are hilarious to ride. You can ride it pretty much anywhere and you can grab a set of dirt rims for around $500 and use it as a trail bike as well. It will subconsciously cause you to do real dumb stuff like ride down the sidewalk/down stairs/up stairs/across the median/through parks etc. Plenty more powerful SM's available but much more maintenance too.

The GSX-S is gonna be the same power and delivery you're used to just more comfortable seating. I demo'd one this year and it was nice but it's pretty standard Japanese inline 4 fare.
