Anyone know of or buy from a good jeweler in either of these cities? I'm looking for good prices and large selection, and to save a few bucks over the border.

any local places in the southwestern ontario area you could recommend would be great as well

What do you want to buy?

If you are considering buying something very expensive look into Tortola or Caymans. When i was about to purchase something that was in the 8k range here, i bought in Grand Cayman for about 4k for same item. Paid for the trip. YMMV

a ring.

Have you checked with Markle Jewelers in Woodstock? Used to be owned by my wifes family, was a good place when we owned it. (Haven't been there in years)
I would still consider offshore shopping, but your needs have to be 5k+ to justify the process. Estate jewelry can provide some real deals, I've bought some very nice diamond trinkets that were previously loved.

I haven't been in that jewelry store in years! Though it's now called Wilson & Markle. Do you have the hook up?

I'm not going to be spending north of 3 or 4k so I'm really just hoping to save $500 or maybe $1000 by going stateside.

No connection anymore, we sold it to Wilson and he made the wilson/markle, seemed like a pretty straight forward guy.
The isnt a huge swing on gold and diamond pricing between Canada and the US. but some states have low sales tax (oregon has 0) and that's a benefit.
Dont get sucked into any deals for crap like a chocolate diamond (its muddy looking because its *****) and paying extra because its a Canadian diamond. Clarity, color, and cut are what matter. You get what you pay for, but very few people can tell you the differences without being trained. Sales people included.
Good shopping
