Going to look at a bike tomorrow, need advice

Bike is a 1998 honda vfr 800. High km.
Owner says it has an electrical problem. Starts up fine but shortly after shuts off (hes thinking tipover or kickstand sensor)

Ideas?

There were occasionally issues with these bikes related to the charging system, but this doesn't sound like the problem here.
Could be a sensor. Is the FI light on?
How does it die? Just "turns off", idle drops till the engine quits?

If it was either of those two things, chances are really good that the bike wouldn't start in the first place.

The question above is valid: how does the bike die? Does it sputter out slowly? Do the gauge cluster and engine suddenly both shut off? Does the engine run fine before it dies? Does it rev fine? Does it immediately start back up afterwards?

Will call and ask to come see it tonight, before I go out tomorrow with the $. Will take a video of the start and die process for you guys.

as already mentioned, its very doubtful its the kickstand or tip over sensor.

dont buy it at full price, allow for electrical trouble shooting expence at your local shop.

If it starts then dies its likely not the lean/bank sensor otherwise the fuelpump wouldnt prime. I would be looking at the fuelpump and/or fuel pump relay. May get enough fuel pressure to start but not to maintain as the pump/relay heats up and fails. Just an idea. Should be throwing a code though.

Thats the high miler VFR for sale at a decent price?

Get someone to do a proper check on that bike before buying it, kneedragger88 is in the East end.

The fuel pump relay may light the Fi light....but usually a pump failure won't. The bike's ECU will usually just assume the bike's tank is out of fuel.

Ended up grabbing it for $1300. Pump primed, FI light turned off, but did not start. Bike was low on gas + had been sitting for awhile, so going to change the plugs fill up on gas and go from there.

Pump may prime but not reach pressure req'd for injectors to function properly...or it could be the fuel pressure regulator.
