Tough call. It is a good camera and a good deal, so if you're set on a GoPro then buy it since they only refresh their lineup once a year, so there shouldn't be any new GoPro release before spring.

On the other hand, if you're open to other models it's not as clear. What might come out between now and the spring? Will it suit your needs? Will it be affordable?

One thing to consider is that if you can get any use out of the camera at all over the winter, then buy it now for sure. I use mine as a silent witness in my car, for example.

Go Pro 3 should be out around christmas I think

Been available for a few weeks now, but maybe not in stores yet.

Actually you bring up a good point, the GoPro 3 Silver Edition is basically the same as the GoPro 2 but more compact and with built-in WiFi. If memory serves, they were being priced at $299.

Does anyone know if the gopro hero2 could record for 8 hours straight, without dropping a single frame (obviously powered by DC with enough memory card capacity)?

I have never recorded for 8 hours straight (Not enough battery), but i have done 4-5 hours straight (Battery Bac) and no issues. I dont see why not though.

You brought up a good point. Whatever happened to that SONY action camera that was supposed to be priced around $200?

the camera market is growing so fast that unless you need it RIGHT NOW, I would just wait and see what spring will deliver. Prices will go down.

Nice. I've had some other cameras that chop the video into 2GB chunks and always drop a lot of frames on the hand over (usually 30 to 45 frames). When you recorded for 4-5 hours straight, was it one huge file or was it split into a few?

I just got my e-mail confirmation that it's ready for pickup in-store, on my way to get it now :)

Currently, it splits but thats because the storage format is FAT32 (Max size a single file can be = 4GB).
I believe if you format in NTFS, it would record everything in one big file since NTFS (No limit really...).

I'm not sure the camera supports NTFS though :(

Thanks! I've been messing with it, the battery backpack thing works great :) And using that, I can connect it to be powered from my bike too! WOOT! Now I just gotta either get the skeleton case or drill a hole in it so I can connect my mic and I'd be happy as pig in ****.

Both FS and the CanadaComputers guy said the Hero2 will only fill up to 32gb of a 64gb card, as it officially only supports 32gb, so I figured I'd stick with that.
