Friendship over Bike..

This is really about comfort, verbal contracts are fine, written contracts are fine, stratched on a steel plate with a penny is fine.

There is no need to overthink this.

Just a piece of paper. Says that you are allowing him to store his bike in your garage for x time or until you or him gives like x days notice
Says you aren't responsible for any damage that happens to the bike while its on your property for any reason whatsoever.

Done.

taking the key, copy of ownership, its all whatever you want to do.

My biggest concern would be that he has his insurance paid up. I may be wrong but I'm pretty certain that if a fire Marshall ruled the cause of a fire to be his bike, your home insurance would deny your fire claim.

I'm no expert, but if you store your friends bike in your garage as a favour with no compensation, you would not be responsible if something happened to it, unless it was your fault to begin with (ie you back your riding lawnmower into it or your kid knocks it over or scratches it. If your place burns down or the bike is stolen, your friend is SOL, unless he has insurance coverage. Just tell him to let his insurance company know where the bike is being stored to make sure it's covered.

Steve, I'd disagree on this. A written/signed contract can be used against his 'friend' if they go to court to argue about the liabilities if something happened to the bike. Spoken word holds no value in court.
Not true spoken word can form a contract

There is a good reason friends should have written contracts for all favours or ventures.

Friend A and friend B agree to do something in partnership keeping it verbal. Then friend A dies or becomes incapacitated and the surviving wife / GF has expectations that were never part of the original agreement. Put it in writing for the third parties.
