First 1000km service ... and a real shock

So I drop off my Bad Boy so that I can get the first scheduled maintenance on him. I start talking to the service guy about prices and he can't give me one .. LOL!! He says that my bike is just too new and they haven't serviced one yet to be able to quote me the amount of time that will be needed to do the valves. So as were are talking I am curious if they have gotten any CB500F's yet (I got mine from North Bay) .... and he says just one ..... but it's already back in the shop. He then proceeds to tell me the dealership has only sold one and it was written off with only 70something km's on it ... not even 100 .. wow!!

Anyone know anyone that rides a 13 CB500F? Hope they are ok :)

I'm pretty sure they have to give you an amount before they start work on something. They can't start work without telling the customer how much it's gonna cost you. I'm pretty sure there's a law in place to protect the customer.
 
I asked him what the max is that I would pay ... he said in the neighbourhood of 300.00 .... as they did a cbr500r ... I pointed out that my bike is naked and might take a little less work .. he agreed. I guess we shall see tomorrow ... :)

hopefully this isn't one of the local shops in mississauge/etobicoke border or you'll be paying 800 after all is said and done. Common bs dealerships use...get a price in writing before hand, otherwise get ready to get ready to bend over when its time to pay up

I will argue day and night about anything higher then 300 considering the service dude told me the max would be 300.00 ...

And what are you gonna do when they come back and say "wow, this was a difficult bike, took our tech 6 hours @ 100 an hour" :lmao:

Told or wrote down 300 are two totally different things.

As mentioned, get the price on paper otherwise bring ky.
 
If its your first service, you can always just get Oil + Filter and do it your self. Easy to do and always good to learn your own bike.
 
your first service shouldn't be too much. it usually is just an oil change and a basic check up to see if anything has come loose.
 
the valve clearance is the labour intensive part ... hopefully not too bad ...
 
I just took my gsxr in today for the first service and after tax it was $200. Took a bit of time but all was good. Very happy with Brampton Powersports from purchase to service so far. :thumbup:

Don't be so naive, I highly doubt that they will touch your valves! " If it sounds good, don't touch it", that's the kind of attitude dealerships have about checking the valve clearance/adjustment.
 
Can you tell us the shop so we can avoid it.
 
Does that bike seriously need the valves checked at the 1000 km service? I thought most modern bikes had this check at well over the 10 000 km mark...

For most bikes the 1000 km service is just a few checks to make sure nothing has come loose and an oil/filter change, as far as I'm aware (and I might be wrong).

It's very unlikely that a new HONDA needs a valve check at the first after sales service. I would hazard a guess that if they did one it would involve a tech listening to the bike while it's running, declaring it to sound perfectly in spec, then charging you $300.00 for the privilege.

*EDIT* You know what? I'm going to eat crow on this one. I found the service manual online and it states that a valve inspection is required at 1K Kms. Wow. Just...... wow. It's on page 42.

If you're going to pay for it anyways then I suggest that you put a little bit of White-Out in an inconspicuous location on the valve cover gasket, so that you can check and see if it's broken when you get the bike back. If it is, then they did the work. If it isn't, then they charged you for doing nothing.

Unfortunately if they can't quote you a first service cost up front your at the wrong dealership.
 
The only new vehicle I have ever owned was a 98 CBR600. Bought in London at Hully Gully.
I was told I had to get my 1st service done by them and them only....what a crock.
I believed it and took it there.
When I came back to get the bike I caught their tech doing burnouts on my new bike out back.
I lost my mind on the service writer who was defending the tech up and down. He said "oh, and you're never gonna do any burnouts on it?"....as if that was supposed to make it all okay. I told him " I paid for it, I will ruin my own stuff if I want to, but I will ruin it myself, not someone I am paying to maintain my stuff.! Put a new tire on it, and don't be surprised if I am back for a free clutch too!!!"...... I made them put a new tire on it and informed them that I would never be back. That was the 5th bike I had bought there.
I never ever take any vehicle to a shop with a service desk and a service writer. I want to shake greasy hands with the person who is servicing my junk. Mom and pop shops all the way. My bikes go to Platinum Powersports, and have since 98 or 99......never a complaint yet.

Your edit is very surprising information. I assumed, like you seemed to, that he was just getting ripped off. That's crazy.

And yes, the white out thing is a good idea. I've heard stories from several people that did just that and caught their Honda dealerships charging them for work that was never done. Although that was on cars.
