F@ck Uber and the car they rode in on

We ordered food for delivery tonight and specifically chose NO contactless delivery. Wondering what was taking so long, we looked outside and saw the bag just left on our porch without even ringing the bell. It was out there long enough that the food was actually cold - not even room temperature. I called the restaurant and they said they could prep a replacement order, but we'd need to pick it up since they use Uber who won't do a re-delivery. That just burned me up, because I've had the same problem with Uber Eats consistently doing the exact same thing (and why we avoid using them). At least with Uber Eats you can claw back the tip. But in this case, the driver gets to keep the tip, Uber gets their full cut with no penalty, we get soggy microwaved food, and the restaurant gets left holding the cold empty bag (they gave us a credit for our next order).

Does the app not notify you when the delivery is marked complete? Only asking as I've never used Uber for delivery. I've used door dash (via McDs app) and it's told me its at my door before the drivers left my driveway.

I have NEVER used any of the food ordering services.
If we order, its for pick up. We make the drive (in town) and pick it up ourselves.
The only thing that gets delivered is Pizza, the good old way. Directly from the restaurant by their driver.

I ordered directly off the Harvey’s web site and there was no additional charge for delivery (just the driver’s tip) or mention of Uber until I called to complain. This location is also a Swiss Chalet that we regularly get delivery from with good results, but clearly they don’t share drivers.

If we order, we always pick up. Never used a delivery service and due to where we live never will. They'll either refuse, miss our house or get stuck.

Just some random experiences...

We came home to find a food delivery on our doorstep, just some odd insight to us on how these things work... except we did not order anything. We decided to do the right thing, mostly because we just came home from a big dinner and we were not hungry for free food... I do not remember seeing an actual address on the package but there was a phone number. Some automated system that asked for the order number, it phoned the person who ordered the food and connected us. They came by and got it. Few blocks away, address was not even similar to ours. I found it very odd but I guess the contact thing made privacy sense, no proper address still seemed odd to me, they must get it on their app?

I work downtown a few days a week. The delivery guys on e-bikes are buzzing around like a swarm of bees... it is shocking to me how many there are. Ordering fast food in the restaurant drives me nuts these days as I am standing there waiting as they fill a list of uber etc. orders. The customer at the counter with cash in hand is the lowest priority in the queue!

Have tried Uber Eats once a few years ago just to see.

Never again. The increased price over just grabbing it oneself immediately put me off and I’ve never tried again, regardless of how tempting it may be.

If the restaurant has their own delivery service I’ll go with that. But for the most part I’ll just go pick it up myself.

I’ve yet to hear of many positive reviews but obviously the demand is there.

I'm too grey beard to bother with using these modern apps or food delivery in general. Everything is close by, and I have a car. 🤷‍♂️

I guess lesson learned?

Use it as few times a month. Sometimes the markup + delivery fee + tip is pretty excessive but for the most part time saved + fuel cost justifies the delivery. I dont typically order from places 'down the street'.

Expecting food to arrive hot especially in winter is a rather amusing idea.

We have a Mandarin close by and I do pickup there.

Containers are jam packed and piping hot, good value.

I suppose delivery of same would arrive hot, but I'm used to driving by and picking it up + we get a 10% discount for doing so.

We mainly use these services when there's a deal that makes the overall cost about the same or less than for us to pick up. Some restaurants are 25 minutes away, which is almost an hour round trip for us to pick up, and if we have to take the MDX a trip like that would use about $7 in gas, nevermind the hassle.

The food service industry as a whole has taken a steaming dump. Add in rando's that don't give a crap delivering food that people don't feel like picking up themselves, and it's not worth the almost certain aggravation.

There must be money in it in some markets..
'Few years ago I was in Vancouver visiting my oldest when she was at UBC...
During the week or so we where there we used Uber Eats 2x.
First delivery the guy was driving a McClaren, second delivery the guy was driving a Lamborghini or a Ferrari...

Those are the guys who take the time to ring the doorbells. A little effort goes a long way.
