Engine washing ... yes!... another useless topic...

Hello all,

Hope everyone is having fun and keeping safe out there in the warzone.

So my noobish question is for the super cleaners out there who probably have a tip or two if they wouldn't mind sharing.

It's the first time I went and popped off the fairings to have a look see while I was spring cleaning/washing the bike today (and missed the crazy thunderstorm by 5 minutes) and I tried to have a go at the parts that rarely see a microfiber cloth.

What I did:
Tried to get in with auto-soap and warm water with a rag.
Found a cheap-o plastic bristle brush and tried to clean in nooks and crannies and in between the engine fins.

Results:

Looks great and black and shiny when wet! :)
Looks like every other part was never washed when dry! :(

It's the baked on mud I suppose... how the heck do you get rid of it? I get it takes some scrubbing, but even sometimes that seems not to do the trick. Oh, and how do you even start to get any rubber hose clean??

So, If anyone has any good products, processes or handy tools that might help that would be great. I found the brush to be pretty good at getting around bolt heads, but the brush itself was too big to get into tighter spots. Next time around I'm going with the toothbrush and at least triple the allotted washing time.

Have a good one! The weekend is looking nice too!

ps: I did a search for this topic... lots of rando things about how to wash the plastics, not to use a pressure washer etc. I'm thinking more along the lines of the engine etc. itself...when you look through the forks and all you see is bleh.

Buy a bottle of Simple Green from CT. It's bio-degradable, and it's a de-greaser. The trick is to spray it on when everything is dry...let it sit for a while, scrub it in, then spray it off.

There are a line of products called "back to black" or "black restore" and the like. They work wonders to restore the colour of hoses and any other black plastic parts (probably work on clutch and engine covers) too.

Use silicone spray for the hoses. I use it on the hoses in my engine bay and it makes them look wet. Oh and a can is cheaper than Mothers.
