Ducati Monster 821

They're going to wrong way, they need smaller displacement engines lol. 75% of their global sales comes from monsters

Fully agree.. everything they're making is getting a bump up. They need something smaller to gain the customers who insurance would hammer for anything over 600 cc. (i.e. the 20 something crowd)

Impressive, since they've been making the same overpriced bike for over 10 years.

Overpriced you say? Do tell. What is it that's made to compete directly with it and performs as good or better than a monster that is cheaper? New 696 at the show was 10k from gp. I wouldn't exactly call that unreasonable

The 696 doesn't hammer you on insurance quite like an I4 600 does. Because it's naked insurance companies are more lenient. For example I still can't insure a 600 for a reasonable sum and I'm nearly 30.

Anyways, something tells me the article has it wrong about the Dark edition. Traditionally the Dark model has **** suspension, not just black paint, but who knows... Sucks that they didn't carry over the rear hugger that they brought to the 1200 from the Diavel. The left side of the 821 is hideous as well.

Also, kind of dumb that even with this bump of power these articles are referring to it as a good beginner bike. It's now putting out over 100hp. A real beginner bike, you know, the Ninja 300 or CBR250R or even CBR500R, those are 35hp, 24hp, and 43hp respectively.

Agreed. I saw a guy fumbling his way out of gp on a 696 monster the other day. One of those so obvious he was new and needed at least a lesson or two it made you shudder. Know what I mean. 100 hp is not a good beginner bike for most people. That's what I was referring to before. Ducati needs to come out with something that's really an entry bike. They have nothing in that segment of the market.

While I agree that the 696 is not a good beginner bike (especially with the original sprocket set which makes the lower gears very punchy), I don't think it puts out near 100 hp. I think it's closer to 80 hp.

I'm not sure what the power is out of one to be honest. I just know it's not something I'd recommend to most new riders to start out with. :dontknow:

Please tell me that's not the horn situated directly behind the rear wheel

Edit: frontwise

Speed triple, Aprilia Shiver, and I call BS on the Ducati claim of 80hp from a two-valve, air-cooled twin 700 (It's not like they don't make up these numbers). Plus, in a few years, the service will bend you over, assuming nothing breaks. I doubt you can get an ABS 696 for $10K.
Even on face value, the 696 quality is not obvious. An FZ8 is a better buy.
They sound great and handle well, but the overall costs of 5 year ownership are very high.

Bigger Monsters, like the 1200 confuse me. Riding a naked with that much power on a highway would be painful. These sell well in Europe and large urban centres as city bikes, which makes sense.

80 Bologna HP. Independent dyno readings show under 70.

The era of the 2-valve, air-cooled Monster is finished. What started as a simple bike with loads of raw attitude has turned into a bland, bloated mess.

696 is two valve, air cooled, 360lbs. That's pretty light and even at 70hp, pretty quick.

The 1200 is nothing like the original concept.
