dont buy gas day - your thoughts?

^+1 I fully agree. I like the whole idea of earth hour but really of you don't do your part to conserve the rest of the year what's the point?

Anyone who buys into this crap is stupid.

As previously stated we only have 3 fuel suppliers. Any two of them simply can not produce enough to meed our demand, then we're dealing with fuel shortages and perhaps $3/L gas.

People also fail to consider the thousands and thousands of other products derived from crude oil. Gasoline is just one of them so if a fuel company is boycotted they're not going to simply stop producing gasoline. If Shell is boycotted, they keep producing fuel and sell it to Imperial and Petro wholesale so they can meet demand. Imperial and Petro raise prices because there's an extra middle man taking a cut.

If you want to stick it to the oil companies.. USE LESS FUEL!

I'm all up for activism, as long as it makes sense.
Resistance to something is very popular these days, to the extent that people won't think it through, they just think it must be good since it's 'acting against something which is bad'.
As you guys noticed- filling up today or tomorrow doesn't make much difference.
It doesn't even state a point- except this one : "hey, we're aware the gas prices are going up! And, hey, we still choose to drive"

Why? Because we can afford it. We still can. Stupidity such this is a western luxury, I think.
No gas day should be a no drive day.
That's what I think.

So you don't buy gas one day...then you need to buy it another day...or the other...makes no difference....

Now make it so you boycott a certain gas supplier for a week or a month...then you may see some kind of reactionary move...but I think people are too disillusioned to bother as not enough will feel that it'll make a difference...or do your thing and be as efficient and conservative as you can be in your life and then it'll make a difference to you only.

This is the way you do it, target a shell, esso, petrocan, etc. for a prolonged period of time until they drop their prices. This would hurt them and teach them a lesson. Hell if social media can overthrow governments, it can sure as hell kick the oil companies in the *****

I've been boycotting Shell this way for years. Not for the gas prices, but because what they did (and still do) to Nigeria and their people is unacceptable on many grounds.
I do sometimes wonder whether my decision not to buy gas from Shell is worth anything, beside the fact that at least I can say i'm somewhat a responsible consumer?

Like I said folks, the only way to 'stick it to the oil companies' is to use less fuel. Further, compared to the rest of the world we pay relatively little for gas. Nowhere outside North America do soccer mom's drive their kids to school in an Escalade with a 6.0L V8.

No it won't. All you're hurting then is the gas station owner and the employees. It becomes an unprofitable franchise and closes. End of story. Even if you could coordinate EVERYONE and get them to boycott ALL Shell/Esso or Petro stations (which is impossible) I've already detailed why that is flawed as well.

Just be aware that all the off-brand stations (Can Tire, Husky, Pioneer, etc) don't refine their own fuel and could be selling you Shell fuel. The only way to be sure you are not using Shell fuel is to buy from Esso or Petro.

If that gives you some peace of mind and a clear conscience, congrats.

makes no difference. People will still buy gas the day after, probably at an inflated price.
Yea guys but he point of it is to show that people can unite on a cause, make a point that there is a medium that will move people to take action. This time is one day, next time will be X... Like a warning shot saying we have the ability to unite. Companies are afraid of unity just like corrupt governments.

If people in Egypt would have this "I don't care" and "I am just one person" attitude they would still be under the old regime of suppression

I think is a good thing, Canadians need to start getting ****** off at things.

Its funny how the gas companies slowly condition us to accept the prices, did any of you remember when we used to think that 1.20 for gas was ridiculous, now we see 1.29 and we all jump to form lineups to buy the "cheap gas"

Its like someone farts in Saudi Arabia and the price goes up at midnight, pure speculations

+1 as above...buying shares is a great idea...especially if they're dividend paying shares! I'm currently looking to start buying some shares and I want to have the ones that pay dividends so this would be a good start.
Yea make sure you buy the dividend paying and not the other ones, sound smart business decision

Now lets find that book that tell us which are the not paying dividend one so we don't buy those

Like I said folks, the only way to 'stick it to the oil companies' is to use less fuel.

Exactly. The first of the Three R's is REDUCE (then reuse and finally recycle). Regrettably, we don't live in a climate or society that allows for much leeway in terms of energy consumption. Efficiencies are possible--taking transit, buying local, insulating your home, et cetera, but energy is the foundation on which our lives rest. It's oil, coal and natural gas today, but the same barons will control the fusion, geothermal, solar, tidal and wind sources in the future.

Electrical vehicles aren't going to change the political landscape much, either, besides making resource extractors even more powerful. I shudder to imagine how much strip mining (and the resulting pollution) is going to be required to electrify the transportation networks globally.

It's depressing stuff, really.

You don't boycott one gas station you boycott all Shell stations as an example, and you coordinate it for one or two weeks. You get enough people doing that and Shell or Esso or whomever will get the message. Not saying its practical, but if you get enough people doing it you will impact that corporation...

Who do you think supplies the smaller no name stations. All gas in Ontario comes from 4 refineries owned by the big 3 does not matter where you buy your gas the money goes to the same 3 big companies Sunoco, Imperial Oil (ESSO) and Shell!

And that is the crux of the problem. Oil - despite the peak oil scars - is still plentiful but the lack of refineries is creating a false scarcity. I heard the other day that a refinery has not been built in North America since the 1970s and given the power of the environment lobbies, I don't think we will likely see one built again.

Meanwhile, China can't build them fast enough ...

No, I already explained why that will likely accomplish nothing as well.

Boo hoo. Start a refinery or pack up the Hummer and move to England where gas is cheap.
