Donor Consent List

My wife is all for it. I am completely against it. I wouldn't put someone else's kidney in me, nor would I would want mine in someone else's.

I'll have my innards rott with me.

I had similar thoughts until a family member needed a kidney.

I'm signed up for donation, they can have everything minus 1 kidney, that one has already been donated.

I am not a surgeon, parametic, etc so it is unlikely that I will have the opportunity to save someone's life or help them lead a healthier life while I am alive so of course I sign my donor card.

Why wouldn't someone want to be able to give that gift in death?

As someone who lives with a 20 year receiver of a liver transplant, I can say my cards and wishes were made years ago.

If you walk downtown you see EVERYONE walk by homeless people and not even look twice. Im not giving my organs to people like this.

I don't really give money to homeless people because i thought Canada has a very good social welfare system (although not perfect). I'm not trying to judge anyone and I know that everyone has his/her own stories and struggles, but I still think that if you can't live an ok life (at least have a roof over your head and have food on your plate) in Canada, there could be something wrong with you...

I know people who came to Canada with little money and built their careers and lives here by working very very hard. On my floor there's a girl who's disabled but always comes to work and tries her best to thrive. There are endless stories like this and if you are homeless in Canada, sorry too bad but I'm not giving you my hard earned money to feed your laziness or whatever the problem that you might have.

back to the topic, I'm all up for it but I haven't done it yet cuz part of me feels like if I sign up, I'm kinda jinxing myself... I know it sounds ridiculous...:sad1:

good for you. and I'm glad that you are living a healthy and happy life now and having fun in it.;)

Not me, most people are ******** and won't even let you change lanes whether in a car, bike or truck.

I think it was Ghandi who said "Be the change you want to see in the world."

I am. If I'm dead I don't need the parts. Better they go to someone that needs them then being burned.

I am. If i'm dead, what do I care what they do with me? If I have the opportunity to save someone's life then so be it.

Just curious, once on the list can you remove yourself from it?? lol what if I get seller's remorse!

hahah better think long and hard before signing that paper

I signed mine when I got my M1, I think they sent me the paperwork with my license (ominous or wishful thinking?) Can't remember, does organ donation automatically qualify your body to be used as a med school cadaver, or is that another step?

You can change your mind at anytime.
Just make the request.
You'll receive a letter in the mail confirming the change.

Okay just thought I'd clear up a few things based on some experiences...

Regarding how much effort will be put into saving your life if you are donor: Total myth. I work in hospitals. Organs are useless if you're dead. There are two sources of donation: Donation after neurological death (brain dead, but heart still beating); and donation after cardiocirculatory death (you're in an ICU, and they take you off of life support even if you're not brain dead, but they know you won't survive without life support - your heart will stop). Either way, the window to procure the organs is very small (usually 1-2 hours). So yes, every effort will be made to save your life, and you will not be removed off of life support without your family giving consent. So talk to your families as someone else said.

Regarding the comments on walking past the homeless: My family's business was a group home for alcoholics. These alcoholics were most of the "homeless" in the city the business was in. They'd go out for an hour, beg, finish off with $50 in their pockets, and then go buy booze. So no, I don't give to the homeless either since that money will mostly go to booze or drugs. I also knew a guy that was living off of disability, but would be a beggar during business hours. Made a ******** of money and drove a nice car. I contribute with my taxes, and there are programs available to the truly homeless. I will buy a coffee if someone asks outside a coffee shop, I will give food, and I might slip a twenty if I see someone lying on a subway exhaust at 2am in minus 20. But the average "homeless" person during the day I will walk past as well. Does that make me less "worthy" to receive organs? I've dedicated my life to helping others. I'm on a Board of Directors for a Shelter, and I work in hospitals, and I helped with the family business looking after alcoholics. You don't know who it is that will walk past homeless, and why they do it.

Not a donor, and never plan to be.
And by that, I mean after death.

If family needs something that I can spare (and is healthy), I'll donate while alive.

I signed mine when I got my G1 18 years ago. I have every intention of living forever, but in the off chance that statistics catch up with me, I'll have no use for them.

As for the homeless, I once offered a homeless guy $5 for the pack of smokes he had in his pocket, he turned around and walked away. I can't afford their lifestyle for myself, let alone them.

Registered online! Everything but my eyes. That's just creepy (and I'm highly photosensitive, don't want someone to live with that).

Same as me, and same reasoning, well the creepy part.

So I never really thought about the donor thing, registered a few days ago for all my organs and tissues. Surprised to read that it won't affect an open-casket funeral which probably sealed the deal for me. I would have just requested to be placed in full leathers anyways.

My dad had cancer but got a liver transplant so I'm obviously down for paying it forward.
