Does MTO update insurance companies each time you get a new conviction?

I heard many different opinions on this subject. Does MTO send an update to an insurance company or are insurance companies required to check on their own (random, on renewal, on new business, whatever pattern they choose) ?

onus is on the insurance company to check. How they check and what formula they use to decide who gets checked... only the insurance company knows.

It's entirely dependant upon the insurance company as there is a cost for each report they do. I happen to know of one insurance company that doesn't check every policy, every year. They don't insure bikes however.

If you're considered very low risk, it's probably not required. Motorcyclist in general are considered higher risk so, I would imagine most companies in the motorcycle market keep fairly regular up to date driving reports. JMO.

MVRs are expensive . . . about $15 a pop. If an insurance company were to order an MVR for every client at every renewal, then the cost would outweigh the benefit. Most companies employ a statistical algorithm to select the clients that were most likely to have made a claim in the last year. Some other companies leave it up to the underwriters to decide, while others never order an MVR for renewal business.
