Does anyone here use a modular helmet?

I am thinking of getting a modular helmet for a variety of reasons... one of which is for those long cruises where I get thirsty and want to flip the front up to drink something (thinking of installing a cup holder too to hold a bottle of water/coffee/gatorade). I know I could get a hydration pack as an alternative, but then I will be limited to water and will have to wear something on my back.

Anyway.... today I tried on a Nolan 103, a Vox something or other, and a Bell modular. Of the three, I liked the Nolan the best. All three had built in sun visors (separate from the clear visor).

Any other recommendations for brands/models?

Check out the Shark Evoline. It's got a different design where the chinbar flips up, and it's possible to ride with the helmet "open". Also has a built in sun visor.

There's a common problem where a plastic that holds the sun visor breaks, but it'll stay in place if you push it up manually. and works fine when the visor is down. I've never really used it anyways.

I like the shark evoline series. I think they're on the only street legal ones that can be rode with it in the up position.

Also I do have a shark evoline etec lumi Brand new sz med for sale.

and just thinking i do have an evo 3 moovit lumi med brand new also for sale.

The scorpion exo-900 (modular) also has drop down tinted sun visor but I don't like modulars. I had a bad experience with the one I had. I prefer the full face for safety reasons.

I have worn a Zox modular with the internal sun shield for a few years now. It was my first modular helmet and it will not be my last. The Zox has a nice solid feel and fits the shape of my head very well. There are two latches on the closure, with a single button release for the chin / visor section. Another thing I like is the quick release chin strap; no more fumbling with D rings. When I bought it there were no other modulars with the internal sun visor and that is the part I really like. Now there are several on the market with this feature, so when it comes time for a replacement I will have a few more to choose from. The Zox is a little more noisy than my last full-face, but it is also far more easy to put on or take off and works well with my glasses.

I have an AGV modular, its pretty noisy compared to my full face but the practical value is there.

you can put anything in a hydration bladder, some will pickup a funny taste.

I have an HJC and I like it. Mind you I don't wear it anymore as I don't fully trust modular helmets.

I have a Nexx Modular helmet. Nice fit, comfort and weight. Built in sun visor, good air flow and great detent positions on the outer visor. Wind noise is ****ing horrible though. After about 100 km I can't take it anymore. For all the great features, I have a $400 helmet that I can't really enjoy. Aviod the Nexx offering.

I see what you did there…

Your head shape makes a huge difference as far as what's going to be comfortable for you. I like the idea of the Shark Evoline series, although I think you give up some in terms of safety if you wear it with the chin part up and over all the time. I like Revzilla for their video breakdowns, get to check out all the nuances (Anthony's favourite word I think) to help you narrow down your search.

If you haven't already, pop down to the hardware store and buy a box of colourful earplugs from the safety section and see how it is.

Had a modular years ago and used to use it regularly. Nolan N102. Too heavy and noisy. Dumped it for a full face Shoei RF1100. Best move I ever made.

Shoei has a new modular helmet, I'd give that a whirl and a twirl, but I'd have to try it before I bought it.

I have a Schuberth C3 Pro, the C3 didn't fit well. So far I really like it, it's quiet, great in the wind, and with ear plugs there's very little wind noise.
I don't find it heavy or bulky at all, the integrated sun visor is probably my favourite part, no more dealing with sunglasses. The modular flip up is quite handy for crossing the border as often as I have been, sometimes they make you take helmet off to see your face, not any more.

True that it might not be as solid in a crash as a 1 piece, but if safety was all I was concerned about, I'd drive a ****ing car.

While at Cycle World West today I tried the HJC IS-MAX BT Helmet and liked it - it fit my head well and seemed well built. I, of course, have no idea how loud or quiet it is.

Anyone here have a IS-MAX and care to give your review?

Did that, really uncomfortable little bastards but the least of the evils.

i have the HJC RPHA MAX, love it. I also have 2 shoei and an arai, I can tell you they are collecting dust. Sure there is a little noise but I find no more then my other helmets.

Safty, not concerned at all, well built fully certified helmet. I have scala and I can listen to music and only have issues hearing when in 6th gear over 6k rmp...so what!!

I can be doing 60 plus km and talk on the phone and no one knows I am on my bike so the noise is negligible.
Hot weather and slow speeds, flip the front up and it's heaven!

I use modular helmets most of the time.
Scorpion 900 did not hold up too well. Quality wise not the best and shell is massive for some reason.
GF had shark Evoline 2, that flip over system is annoying. For one you must remember to move shield up
before you close it otherwise chin bar scrapes over it. Closing and opening it is fiddly at best.

Can not recommend those at all.

Last year I used Nolan N-103. Not bad helmet but I had some problems with fit.
I got it sorted out but than I crashed and busted the helmet.
It worked perfectly. I got good smack on the head and I did not even get headache.
If it fits you it is good helmet but I did not buy it again.

Schubert was next plan but they are pricey....

While I was contemplating something else came along.

Lazer Monaco Carbon...
Sold by Revzilla in North America.
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/lazer-monaco-carbon-helmet
530$ for mostly carbon fiber modular with photocromic shield and pinlock.
Detailed review here

There is non carbon version still with photochromatic shield for 350$

This is amazing deal.

My carbon version is extremely light, visor works well and does not need internal one.
Ventilation is really good, you can feel air flow over the top of the head.

They supply additional plugs for top vents to seal helmet in heavy rain.
I used it in light rain and it did not leak so I am not sure how necessary those are.

Helmet comes pre wired for their comm system but it is easy to remove the wires.
I installed Scala G9 on and it was simple install.

Beware Schubert style slide for internal visor that can be blocked by comm devices.

I ordered helmet without trying it on and it worked out for me.
If anything order size up from their sizing charts. I did that and it is good fit.

I think they have good return policy.

It might not be as good as Schubert but it is much lighter, has some amazing features
and it works great....

Cheers!

Actually earplugs are not all made equal. Don't just get crappy cheapo ones and dismiss it all.
I used some that were horrible but there is hope...

1110 3M work great for me.

Comfortable on long rides, block noise but I can still use Scala fine.
I think they block certain frequencies but I am not sure about that.
Way I understand it high frequencies (wind) are blocked more than talk.

Anyway... this is spec sheet

On noisy bikes they are worth every penny on long fast rides.
