Does anyone here use a modular helmet?

Very helpful, thank you. Part of my issue is that I do use an F4 communicator and I don't want to block all the noise out. I don't remember what kind I bought but I do recall they weren't dirt cheap. I will give the 3M product a try.

Actually earplugs are not all made equal. Don't just get crappy cheapo ones and dismiss it all.
I used some that were horrible but there is hope...

1110 3M work great for me.

Comfortable on long rides, block noise but I can still use Scala fine.
I think they block certain frequencies but I am not sure about that.
Way I understand it high frequencies (wind) are blocked more than talk.

Anyway... this is spec sheet

On noisy bikes they are worth every penny on long fast rides.

You can buy varying levels of earplugs - the rating is in -dB - the higher the number the higher the attentuation.

I find -33 a bit too quiet except at freeway speeds and I can barely hear the Scala at full volume.

--26 to -28 should work but for me best is having my Ultimate Ears earphones hooked to my iPhone for music and voice nav and I can still hear the Scala easily plus they offer decent ambient noise isolation plus much much better music fidelity and voice nav clarity.
I restrict the Scala to phone and buddy chat. The app MotionX GPSDrive kills the music while the voice nav is speaking and then resumes it.
Was very nice yesterday being able to wander and still get to where I wanted without having to consult a map.

I use a modular in Aus for on road and off road but rarely put the chin piece down except in heavy rain and with it up it's a nice sunshade.

I prefer 3/4 and the Bell Mag series are brilliant. Easy to get on and off - great visor and superb value with easy set up for electronics plus much lighter than the convertible.

+1 for Shark Evoline. I crashed with the Series 2. The chin bar took the hit and remained in place. The flip-up mechanism worked fine after the hit, and I had no injury to my head or neck. The chin vent cover and visor broke off, so I just used the sun shade as my visor for the rest of the trip home. That was about 6 hours of highway riding. It was a little breezy, but still gave me enough eye protection to get back. I replaced it with the Series 3, which is lighter & opens with a single move. On the older ones, you have to lift the visor before you lift the chin bar.

I like that you can ride with the chin bar open. Its nice around the city on super hot days. I also wear glasses, and the Shark has a softer pad where the arm slides in. Its also easier to put the glasses on with the chin bar up.

I replaced my Shark Evoline with a Shoei Neotec. Both are great, but the Shoei fits my melon a bit better, and is lots lighter compared to the Evoline.

Where have you folks been getting your Shoei Neotec's from? I like them and they fit my head, but they are pricey:(

I got mine through Sturgess Cycle. The Borealis colour scheme is pricey!!

Another vote for Shark Evoline. Will replace my current one with a series 3 when the time comes. I just prefer the mechanism to any of the others and riding with the chin bar up on hot days is pretty nice when needed.

My Head is very square and fits HJC helmets very well. I went through few full-face HJC's before going to Modular HJC's. I love the convenience of the modular and sicne I ride a lot it is very handy. The last HJC was the SY-Max II. I liked the helmet a lot but kept breaking the internal flip-down sun visor. When looking for an alternative I tried on the Scorpion EXO-900. It fit me very well and seemed better built than the SY-Max plus it was quieter. I have over 110,000 km on it and am very happy. The only isuses I have had have been self inflicted ones.

A friend's wife in the USA crashed tested the EXO 900. She was coming around a bend at speed and hit a wet mossy spot of the road. I don't know the speeds but knowing them I'm sure over 70kph. She slid along dry pavement face down for a ways before hitting the guard rail. She broke several bones IIRC but the helmet did the job and saved her face.
