So I unfortunately lost my key for the ducati 848. It came with two black keys and no security code.
I do have one key, and I would like to make a copy in case something happens. Any ideas how to take care of this? There seems to be a lot of mixed info in the other ducati forums.
I don't know specifically about getting your keys duplicated without the code. I do know, however, about the consequences of not having the Code Card (which has the security code on it).
Not to be a drama queen, but it is imperative for you to get that Code Card. Without it, you're screwed if your immobilizer kicks in, and you do not have your security code to override it. I know, b/c this happened to me (i.e., being sold a used Duc w/o the card).
When I bought my used Monster at a dealer (shall remain nameless, but pretty easy to guess which one), they did not give me the code card. The salesperson said that it wasn't a big deal. Don't believe this, b/c it is a very big deal.
I called Ducati N. America to get their take, and they told me that if you do not have your Code Card, and the immobilizer is activated, then you have to buy a new ECU, dash, ignition set. I was quoted about $5,000 + labour. The other method is for the Dealer (if they still can't find the card) to beg to Ducati Head office in Italy for the code. This seldom happens--if at all.
Your best bet is to go to whomever you got your bike and get that card. If not, and it's a dealer, then call Ducati N. America, and get OMVIC involved.
Luckily, for me, the dealer's owner had the Code Card stashed away. If they didn't have it, I would have sued.
