So I unfortunately lost my key for the ducati 848. It came with two black keys and no security code.

I do have one key, and I would like to make a copy in case something happens. Any ideas how to take care of this? There seems to be a lot of mixed info in the other ducati forums.

There's the official way and the way that'll work for you...

Officially, you need get a locksmith to cut a new key from a Ducati blank (one with a transponder embedded in it). You then take this new key and add the new transponder code into your immobilizer by programming it with the 5-digit security code. The code which you don't have... Sometimes dealers keep a copy of it on file. If you know which dealership sold the bike, maybe contact them for the security code, you may have to go in person, show ID, proof of ownership etc.

Or...

Get the key cloned. There are locksmiths online that have transponder cloning machines, if you send them your original, they'll send it back with an exact duplicate (physically and digitally) so you don't have to program your immobilizer.

Google "Ducati key clone", there are tons online, it'll cost you maybe $30-$35.

Call Chris at Dukes of Cycle. I think he may know someone that can help you.

Take it to an authorized Ducati dealer. They'll cut and program the key for you.

Might be highjacking but dont want to make a thread of the similar thing.

Anyone know if 08+ Ninja 250R key requires programming?? I ordered a blank key on ebay, still waiting for it to arrive. Can I bring it to Canadian tire and let them cut for me?? It seems like there is no chip or code in the key itself.

I don't know specifically about getting your keys duplicated without the code. I do know, however, about the consequences of not having the Code Card (which has the security code on it).

Not to be a drama queen, but it is imperative for you to get that Code Card. Without it, you're screwed if your immobilizer kicks in, and you do not have your security code to override it. I know, b/c this happened to me (i.e., being sold a used Duc w/o the card).

When I bought my used Monster at a dealer (shall remain nameless, but pretty easy to guess which one), they did not give me the code card. The salesperson said that it wasn't a big deal. Don't believe this, b/c it is a very big deal.

I called Ducati N. America to get their take, and they told me that if you do not have your Code Card, and the immobilizer is activated, then you have to buy a new ECU, dash, ignition set. I was quoted about $5,000 + labour. The other method is for the Dealer (if they still can't find the card) to beg to Ducati Head office in Italy for the code. This seldom happens--if at all.

Your best bet is to go to whomever you got your bike and get that card. If not, and it's a dealer, then call Ducati N. America, and get OMVIC involved.

Luckily, for me, the dealer's owner had the Code Card stashed away. If they didn't have it, I would have sued.

Found this, might be handy: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=55984.0

The code card only really seems useful if there is a minor problem with the immobilizer (and making it easier to get keys copied).

You don't need to get your key programmed. Canadian Tire can probably cut it for you (competency of staff notwithstanding)

There is no such thing as a minor problem when it comes to Ducati's immobilizer. If the immobilizer is engaged, the bike will *never* start without the code. No code=sell the bike for parts. Or, spend over $5K to get a new ignition set.

By minor problem, I meant unable to read the key. If it's a major problem, then you'd need to replace the whole immobilizer system whether or not you had the code card.

they use idiot proof machines now.. so long as your key is in good shape they can cut it. all they do is clamp your key in one spot and a new one in the other then push go.

My 09 650R didn't need any programming. Canadian Tire could not cut it, though. I went to a local locksmith and got one for like $10.

yes. but they have to take both keys out and flip them. i think some machines do both sides but not many.

if you want a good cut key i would go to a actual locksmith though, and they dont usually cost more than crappy tire.
i know rockwood mall has a good key shop in it. they dont usually stock all the motorcycle blanks but he can order them in.

thanks, you are right, i think is safer to go to a locksmith. I have the blank I bought from ebay, red Kawasaki key! I think red is the best colour for sport bikes, haha, adds a few hp.

joking.

Hi, we CAN make extra keys for Ducati's. The process is more complicated than just cutting a copy form a blank key. First of all the blank needs to be a chipped programmable key (original Ducati keys are not programmable). Second, the blade needs to be copied/cut, for some models its a laser cut key. Third, you need a special key cloner device, capable of copying the information from your original key to a new blank. In this way you don't need a code card, we are just creating a new key with an old key transponder code. Not CanadianTire cheap but doable. Good Wheel Motors Inc
