Coffee

What is your home brew routine? I’m far from a connoisseur. Friends do the French press and grab some beans from whatever place but, I’m still intimidated in that process to develop a consistent blend I can enjoy. So, I end up with my Kirkland tin and black and decker drip machine.

I’m sure there is way better out there without breaking the bank or becoming a barrister myself. Thus I pose the question to the gtam brain trust!

I mean, the liquor and scotch threads are insightful so, I figured coffee is a natural progression.

Although I have considered it, I dont drink enough coffee to spend the time (and money) experimenting with blends and machines. Also, when its time for a wakeup coffee the last thing I want (or need) is a lousy cuppa. Tassimo does it for me.

Not what you are looking for but it is what it is.

Brew pot, 4 scoops, water, hit the switch. Sugar and cream to taste.

Niles Crane:
"Uh, yes. Double decaf non-fat latte, mmm... medium foam, dusted with just the faintest whisper of cinnamon."
"Can you believe the incompetence of that man? I very clearly asked for a whisper of cinnamon, he's given me a full-throated shout! There are countries in this world where they would lop off his sprinkling hand!"

I’ve got a good old Keurig that does the job but, I use that for my one and done. Maybe two. But, working from home, sometimes I need more than 2 which means making a pot.

Some folks, it’s a science and it does show. I guess I’m lazy but, want the short cut to a better cuppa without the work and keep it consistent. 🤷‍♂️

Edit: I like my coffee like my woman. Hot and without an extras. 😉

Aeropress is a cheap (relatively), fast and easy intro to decent coffee at home by the cup. Much less muddy than french press.

Pourover can be cheap to get into too but I prefer aeropress coffee personally.

When trying to figure out dosing, start with online sources that provide weight of coffee vs weight of water. That gives you a proper cup of coffee as a baseline. Most Canadians prefer much weaker than this.

Watch the overextracted piss that pumps out of a Keurig for the last half of each cup. If you're feeling brave, catch some of that swill in a clean cup and sample it. K-cups are way too small for the volume of water Keurig pumps through them.

Each morning I additional grounds to the wet pile already in the machine, then add water and go. I only dump grinds/replace filter when it won't hold any more.

I mostly drink it black. Cream and sugar is for people who don't like the taste of coffee.

We have one of these.... Built into our recent-ish kitchen renovation.
I sh it my pants when I found out how much it cost, but I'm the one in the house that uses it the most... lol.
Mrs. Gaoler keeps it loaded with fresh beans. All I do is put my cup under the spigot and push a button... measures, grinds and brews in about 1 minute.
Its a built in so it doesn't take up any counter space...

I had a lovely red Breville for years which did a fantastic job for my many daily lattes..mostly with a dollop of Baileys.

Something, either in the aging process or the drugs I need has killed my ability to tolerate coffee tho I did have a small latte courtesy Hungry Jacks ( Burger King here ) free seniors coffee yesterday.

Remarkably every outlet has serious coffee machines ....McDonalds has MacD Cafes too and every bloody servo station even in the remote outback.
Coffee has replaced beer in Australia...in part cuz of draconoian DUI penalties with constant enforcement.
One of my biggest complaints over aging..1764701999921.gif
I recall my dad also could only handle half a cup of perked at family dinners as he aged.
I do love the smell when partner makes hers in the Nespresso....convenient but never came close to what the Breville could produce with correct grind and tamping.😢

That Breville is a workhorse. I have one. Used every day 4-5 times 365 days a year no issues whatsoever. Makes great coffee once it’s all dialled in.

I have a Nespresso machine in my office. It’s actually pretty decent.

And yet you still have to make the coffee yourself? You need to have a serious talk with her!

I know ..!!

Wommenz lib ruins everything.

To be fair, all I do is push a button... but I'm a modern guy who doesn't mind if she's too busy ironing to make me a coffee...

That could get you beaten in some circles.... lol

I'm a french press guy.... mostly because I am too lazy to do a proper pourover or mess with an aeropress.

Matching how you grind your coffee with your preparation method make a big difference.

Those fancy coffee makers are convenient to use but a lot of work to properly clean. A friend bought a house with one similar. It took me a few hours to strip it, clean it and reassemble. In an annoying twist, there were a couple screws that required removing the machine from the wall to access. Wtaf. Terrible product design. Coffee afterwards tasted much better. Coffee oil years old is not delicious.

I use a normal pot at home that I use daily when WFH, and a second system when I get to the office.

Home: Put in enough for 10 cups and then 5:1 ratio of VERONA (Starbucks or dark roast) to Vanilla coffee from Costco.

Office: Take a 5:1 ratio from home and use reusable K-cups so I'm 'good' for the environment.

I'm tempted to get a French Press or the Aeropress as I spend more time in the office.

Nothing fancy, but I love my coffee.

The French Press makes more sense because it would allow me to make 2-3 cups in a shot instead of having to play around with the K-cup machine.

I don't like the fancy schmancy machines simply because it takes so much effort to clean, and then also most of the time they only make one cup at a time so it takes forever to get a family prepared for a coffee so not really worth it. Took us 40min once to make 5 coffees at a friend's place and I said 'never in my house'.

My wife bought me a Baratza Vario many years ago. It is not the best espresso grinder but it is acceptable and makes it easy to change grind and dosing for various preparation methods. It was expensive then, it is bonkers pricing now. At one point, it ate a rock mixed in with the beans and made a terrible noise. $20 worth of easily available parts and a few minutes of work and it was back in the game. That was a nice surprise.
