Chigee

Hey MP - just keep in mind it won't be proper "mirror"-ing, as in, it won't be an exact replica of what's happening on your screen. Android Auto is just a simplified version of android, like a stripped down version, with basically only what you would need while driving and nothing more.

So for example, you can read a text and use voice to text to send a reply if you want to, but you won't be able to use a full keyboard to reply... But you can still do that to type in an address in Waze/Google Maps... You also won't have access to all apps either, so for example, no YouTube, Instagram, etc.

Some units do offer the ability to actually mirror your phone screen, but I think you typically have to pay a little extra for the ones with that, and honestly, while the device I have in my truck can do that too, I've never bothered with the mirror'ing, and the one time I did try, the touch screen of the device wasn't working, so mirroring was more trouble than it was worth. Android Auto is enough for me.
Thanks for that explanation! That’s actually better as literally all I want is the GPS screen.

Anything over and above that (ie: music control) is a bonus to me.

Oh yeah, you'll get that too. Some of them do split screen with nav on one side and audio app on the other (like music, audible, certain podcast apps, etc.)

Nice! Hope it's as good to you as mine has been to me. Finding the cleanest install is the hardest bit. Also, it's obvious but I'm going to restate it anyway: make sure it's connected to a switched power source or your battery will be dead in no time. The instructions are surprisingly decent if I recall...

For me, this is far superior to true mirroring. I don't want all my alerts and icons, and I want everything to be super-sized so it's easy to tap and does the bare necessities for the things I need when driving/riding. Even the Google Maps app is simplified and made chunkier, eliminating things like being able to select departure/arrival times etc.

In other words, the less I have to squint at the screen to find what I need, the better...

Agreed. Less is more when driving/riding.

Doesn't your Maverick have Android Auto / Car Play? If so, that'll give you an idea of how it works on a bike (slightly adjusted depending on screen size).

Also, if so, and you're not using it, you should at least try it. Google Maps is much better, though hardly perfect, than dedicated GPS units for traffic routing. Our Hyundai has GPS, but I have only ever used it when I can't use my phone for some rare reason...

Mirror Link was a thing in the past. It was far closer to a screen mirroring solution (but not exactly a mirror, it was a simplified version of phone screen). It was first gimped and apps like youtube were killed for it and in 2023 they abandoned the whole ecosystem.

By almost every measure android auto is better than mirroring.

GPS - 100%
Music / Podcast control - very nice to have as I find I have to stop sometimes as the gloves won't work with my phone while riding.

That means stop, take off gloves and fiddle with phone on the side of the road / gas station.

If I have the phone in my pocket that means I need to stop, take phone out, and then play with it. Very annoying.

I'm sure I can snag a used one on FBMP/Kijiji. Of course after this thread the Chigee unit is all over my feed...$500-600....

So you getting a new bike to go with this? I think you had a thread about a 2nd bike, did it happen? Still time xmas will be here!
I am all over the place on this still. I stumbled across a Porsche Cayman S and that threw me off for a while.

As for bikes, I am really digging the look of a bobber at the moment and would like to sit on a few to see how they fit.

So indecisive! Clearly I have little to worry about and I am very grateful for that!

I have a decent spot to mount already...where I used to put my phone :). I like that it can be powered by USB C and I have a USB port that I switch on when I want it.

True, but the units are full android tablets that run regular android apps.

I don’t always mirror my phone screen on my tablet, most of the time I run google maps and TuneIn, YouTube, phone, FM radio and a few other apps right on the tablet. I could run instagram, Facebook apps too - but I’m an adult now.

Are you using a sim card in the tablet or is it using your phone as a hotspot?
