Cameras cameras everywhere...

So Ford wants to remove speed cameras (I agree they are cash grabs, but also feel they have their space in certain areas such as school zones) and wants to float the idea of MORE cameras to now deal with crime / local issues.

That would be a LOT of new cameras in the Province instead of just speed cameras.

Not sure how I feel about that one yet.
Like most of douggies ideas, this is half-baked at best. Douggie wanted to repurpose speed cameras to monitor entrances to neighbourhoods. Most municipalities don't own the cameras. The company that owns the cameras currently gets ~30% of ticket revenue to pay for the cameras and their service. If the tickets drop to zero, the cameras do not remain in Ontario, they get redeployed to a jurisdiction where they can generate money.

Not sure how I feel about it either. But than again, I have nothing to hide.

I wonder how much the bill would be to "reprogram" the existing speed cameras to be reused for crime cameras.

Or send a bill (in the $ millions ) for using their cameras and the service.

Feels like another knee jerk reaction, instead of a well though out plan to curb both speeders and crime.
And probably because there are contracts in place for the speed cameras, that you can't just stop using without penalties.

The contracts are between municipalities and providers. Not douggies bill.

IIRC Brampton built a processing centre and is a service provider to other municipalities. That's part of the reason Brown is pushing so hard. He gets all the money from Brampton cameras and cut of other municipalities too.

These crime cameras will be a fail. Either the bad guys shoot them on the way in or more likely they are in stolen cars/plates anyway so almost no useful information will be obtained. Sure, it may help the cops know they are looking for a black BMW sooner but barring a miracle, that doesn't help find the perpetrators.

Big in the US.

I'm not grossly opposed to some uses of the cameras. For instance, the more license plate readers, the better IMO. Get the dirtbags (no insurance, no plates, stolen plates, etc) off the street. If they see a no-plate vehicle leaving an area at the same time every day, it would be easy to post a cop to grab it one day.

My problem is the government (all levels) constantly over-reaches and says one thing and then does another. In the interest of general privacy, I'd want a rock solid program to securely destroy all non-infraction footage/images after a short period of time (probably a week). I hate the idea of a cop being able to type in my plate number and without a warrant they get almost a complete record of my movements since the program started. I've done nothing wrong, but what if I happened to be in the area of a crime on more than one day? That makes me a suspect and necessitates a lawyer for questioning even though I have zero connection to whatever crime they were investigating.

When I was in Poland earlier this year I asked my cousins what’s with the cameras on the roads….

They’re there to track cars / people. So if cops are looking for someone specific they tap into the camera and it helps find perpetrators / vehicles identified in a crime.

And people tell me Canada is a communist country 🤦🏻‍♂️

Speeding is a crime so nothings changed.
Personally we need more speed cameras so the money can be put into health care.
Edmonton Alberta was pulling in a million dollars a month.
Now they are using private mobile operators so it is even more lucrative.
They had to go full digital because they could no longer fit film drums into vehicles because they became to large.

I've seen more than a couple episodes of the first 48 in some southern states where the highway license plate reader cameras have helped solve murder cases...from a unique sticker on someone back window glass, or unique rims, etc. to point the investigators in the right direction with the registered owner....

I wouldn't get my hopes up it would help any police force in the gta though, Rebel news story yesterday of LCBO robbers caught on camera, got the get away vehicle license plate, reporter went to the home it was registered to (not sure how he got that info) called police and no surprise they didn't care to check it out, or take the info to investigate further. Also as state above everyone I've talked to who's had a trailer stolen or property stolen, every time they've given the license plate to police it's always been a stolen one.

Apart from cameras, remember the States tried a listening device in some cities to pick up gunshots. It was called the shot spotter, ( let`s hear the bad jokes and puns). They probably burned out from overuse. What became of those things? And forget all this camera stuff here, if we`re going to spend large let`s get the municipalities and the OPP to get a couple surplus Predator or the newer Reaper drones, now there`s a crime deterrent!

Spot shotter was cool. I have no idea with it was economically reasonable. Put a few systems around and based on arrival time of gun shots, they can locate the source quite quickly and accurately. To me, it makes a lot more sense as a temporary system at events like rally's or festivals (eg charlie kirk event so at least one cop would know the shooters location instantly and could then focus response) than to determine that a gang-banger was shooting on driftwood. Of course they were. They are gone lone before there is a response. You wasted money on the technology as it changed nothing.

Except health care is managed by the province, which doesn't get a dime of speed camera revenue.

If that was the goal, there is an end run but I have less than zero faith in useful implementation. Speed camera revenue > addiction treatment frees up some municipal money (thousands less ambulance rides) and some health care time and money (less stupid trips to the hospital that just waste time and money but have no lasting effect on health).

Didn’t the province have speed cameras on the 400 series highways years ago?

Everyone would slam their brakes when they saw a van parked by the side of the road.

We have monitoring equipment on our jobs monitoring surface settlement…damn monitor gets damaged (today for instance) because idiots think it’s a speed camera 🤦🏻‍♂️

First generation of speed cameras in Ontario were in vans. I saw them on smaller highways but not expressways (maybe they were there too but I didn't see them). They were also killed as they were pretending they were safety but used them for revenue.

Would "Not a speed camera" stickers help or hurt? We end up using high voltage stickers to try to keep people from fiddling. I'd make your boxes look like padmount transformers and most of the rifraff will never be the wiser.

Funny story but the shot spotter system in Chicago was mothballed because it was deemed racist, kid you not.
