Buy now or wait till after safety training?

My Training is scheduled for April 25th, 27th and 28th with learning curves.

While I wait for an answer on my pre-approval for financing at GPBikes, I gotta ask.

I have to buy gear for the training course regardless of if I buy the bike or not so should I buy the bike now and kindly ask one of you monkeys to teach me the basics :D or wait till after the safety training.

Things to consider;

  • The bike I want may no longer be there by then and I really REALLY want that bike.
  • Even though I'm new at motorcycles, I've been on two wheels for ages. I know there's a huge difference between bicycle and motorcycle but at the same time some concepts are the same on both. (Leaning for turns, shoulder checks, push steering)
  • If I get it now I plan to practice a ton in a parking lot before I even try to use it to go to work.

My biggest concerns about the whole thing is the clutch/shifting and right turns because I've been a passenger on the receiving end of an ******* going "right of way mother****ers!" and engaging ramming speed from half a block away with a yellow up when a friend was doing a right turn in a car; not a fun experience.

It's up to you man. No one can really tell you how to spend your money if you have your heart set on something already. That being said, there will always be other bikes to buy. My suggestion is to buy used. I'm sure you've dropped your bicycle before right?

No harm in buying it before your course. If anything it'll give you time to practice before actually taking the course (so you have an easier time there)

I am buying a used bike, I'm just buying it from gpbikes at what I see as a good value compared to random kijiji dude selling a model 4-10 years older for 500-1000 less than the one I am looking at buying.

I know it's ultimately up to me but still I value the opinion of more experienced riders who have gone through he process before. :)

I'd say wait until after the course. You may end up realizing that riding isn't for you.

As AF4iK said, there'll always be another bike, so you have time to wait. Don't let your emotions get the better of you. Also, as you very well know, dealers and manufacturers purposely deceive customers into believing that a particular bike is of low supply.

Good luck with the course! :)

what bike are you getting ?

Well, I bought and rode my bike before training. In fact, I rode it TO the course both riding days. That said, I used to ride a modded 50km/hr ebike around town, so it wasn't really a huge leap for me.

I say get it, but only ride where you're comfortable, practice in parking lots, maybe some backroads, but take it easy; you really do learn a lot in the course.

I ended up buying my bike before my training ccourse. Still sitting at the dealership ready to be picked up at the end of the month.

You live once, buy it. :)

I would just do the course first and then buy later. The course is somewhat of an eye-opener and it may change your opinion on the bike you currently think you want. Of course it may not and if the bike you are looking at is the deal of the decade, then go for it. So basically, that was no help at all.

:lmao:

I been doing that all day (instead of working :D) so far lowest I've found is 1200 per year from TD

go get it if you really want it . if u end up not liking riding bike after the course , u can still resell it for the similar price you bought it anyways, season is just starting , there will be many buyers ...

Don't forget that you save on taxes if you buy used.. so that 1000$ you saved at the dealer could cost you 2000$ out the door taxes and all that other crap included.

I've bought used from GP BIkes before and had a good experience, FWIW.

As to whether to buy now or buy later, there are pros and cons.

Pros - buying stuff is fun, drooling over a motorcycle and playing with it in the garage is fun, getting excited is fun

Cons - if you find out riding isn't for you it sucks, if you get hurt and can't ride for a while that sucks, if you find out you really want to buy a 600 kg cruiser and you bought a 200 kg sport bike that sucks (not likely, I know), if you end up fooling around on your new bike before the course and drop it - damaging it and/or yourself - that sucks and you'll not forgive yourself for a very long time.

Unless you're interested in some rare bike, there will always be another one for sale. Don't let the pressure of buying THAT bike blind you to the fact there are lots of bikes for sale.

There isn't really a right decision. Best of luck.

Is it a used black kawasaki from gpbikes per chance?

Because they just called me to say I've been approved for the financing but that bike was already sold and the sales dude had not removed it from the site.

I don't see why taxes on a $4000 bike would be $2000

I took my buddy out to buy helmet, boots, jacket and gloves just before he took the course. He dropped over $1k.
He took the course, flunked it and decided his biker fantasy was just that- a fantasy.
3 years later and the gear is still gathering dust in his closet- unused!
