I can't even read Shaman's responses on this anymore. For three years he's done nothing but piss and moan about how awful the BMW is and how wonderful the Ape is.
I've had an S1000RR new since April 2010. I have 36,000 kms to date. Maintenance is about the same from a dealer as my Honda's were.
I had a problem with the left switchgear turn signal that developed last year after about 25,000 kms. BMW replaced it. No problems since.
Handling is excellent. Power is ridiculous. Brakes are superb. Electronics are mildly intrusive under very hard acceleration (wheelie control take a couple of minutes to get used to). ABS brakes are fantastic.
I've ridden the bike coast to coast and had no issues with reliability. Fit and finish is better than my Honda's.
I've never heard of any of the problems others have posted above.
