BMW S1000RR Owners - Tell me what you know!

I can't even read Shaman's responses on this anymore. For three years he's done nothing but piss and moan about how awful the BMW is and how wonderful the Ape is.

I've had an S1000RR new since April 2010. I have 36,000 kms to date. Maintenance is about the same from a dealer as my Honda's were.

I had a problem with the left switchgear turn signal that developed last year after about 25,000 kms. BMW replaced it. No problems since.

Handling is excellent. Power is ridiculous. Brakes are superb. Electronics are mildly intrusive under very hard acceleration (wheelie control take a couple of minutes to get used to). ABS brakes are fantastic.

I've ridden the bike coast to coast and had no issues with reliability. Fit and finish is better than my Honda's.

I've never heard of any of the problems others have posted above.

Good luck with your decision.

Yes, yes! Let the butthurt flow!

I don't like the bands you like!

I'm not in the least offended by you. I'm merely pointing out that this is nothing new from you. You don't like the S1000RR. I think everyone understands that. But you NEED to take every opportunity to say it. Again. And again. And again. And again.

I do happen to like the Ape VERY MUCH. You tend not to read that (or understand it, I'm not sure which). The only thing I personally have against the Ape is that it doesn't fit my 6"4" frame.

And, you might notice that I don't post on EVERY SINGLE Aprillia thread in this forum to express my opinion 20 - 30 times. The same can't be said for you, I'm afraid. If you search every thread discussing the S1000RR you'll find that the bulk of the posts are yours. And you don't owbn one.:D

if you only ride it on the street then you don't need traction control, if you ride it on the track then you will need it big time.

Ability and skill is great and the most important thing, but it gets to a moment where technology surpasses the ability of the human body to manage a machine, at that point is when you need traction control or put a lot of bubble wrap around you!

Forks of credit and the 507 don't need traction control, I think it actually gets in the way to having some fun on the street, but move the same bike to a technical track and traction control is a necessity.

You'd be surprised how manageable 180whp is without TC on a well setup bike. It does however eat tires like a fat kid at a dessert buffet.

Says the guy that has TC on his track 600 ;)

My wife had one for a season. No problems. Build quality is excellent and the handling is superb.

It's high quality toy, definitely built to last has all the goodies for a lil extra to set it apart from jap bikes. I got one this spring salvage with plastic damage mostly, had it for a spin couple of times on niagara twisties. To compare to old ninja 600 zzr and 2005 gsxr 1000 i had is like night and day, well liter to liter comparison with gixer mid range same but bimmer has insane pickup from somewhere 2000 all to redline didnt notice any flat spots on any gear up to red line, traction is very nice for uncontrolled wheely because that throttle is a killer, upshifting it breaks out of your arms. Found position very similar on both bikes very comfy for my weight and height average 76kg, 176cm, only thing suspension is stiff on bimmer, gixer feels nicer on streets. Wind factor, didnt notice any major difference, temp is normal didnt see it going past 90c while driving/stoping, frame heat cant comment because there is no gridlock in niagara. Mechanical too early to say, my is 2010 and they started i believe in 09 give them another 3-4 years and see. Will be for sale end of summer, i want to ride it still.

Viccont - actually, new in 2010, not 2009.

I haven't noticed heat radiating off the bike in traffic. But, I usually wear leathers. It is less hot then my CBR was in traffic.

Now that I recall there was talk on the forums of a few motors exploding on the earliest models. I dunno if it was ever actually proven to be a fault. You did have a lot of yahoos taking them out of the box and then riding the crap out of them and then complain when something broke.

There are at least two good forums I know of with some detailed information. That includes some negative reviews.

Good Point. :o

Vic is a prime example of someone who needs TC on any bike. if only the zzr600 had it.

Your'e right, I don't want one. You're wrong iin that I don't like it. But it's become the Toyota Supra of bikes - deserving of praise but not the holy grail that will enter you unto heaven with a fanfare of angels blowing trumpets. The original version spit rods, gearboxes and riders with alarming consistency and would porpoise off the hairpin of Shannonville until your balls crawled into the back of your butt to die. But I guess you never make use of that "180whp" except to brag about it, amirite?

I recognize fanboyism and it's as strong here as it was with Toyota Supras and Honda Civics back in the late 90s.

And hey @#$%wit, I sold my street Suzuki for what I paid for it after three years of riding it... also raced plenty of S1000RRS - some on video, and proved my point. But if you're upset being slapped down by a $7500 bike there's always nitrous...

Shaman does have a point, I've been side buy side with my r1 and BMW on the track, it doesn't pull away like you think it would, and 99% of the time you can stuff them on the brakes anyway
Maybe it was in rain mode lol

As for having seen three BMWs go boom: I guess I don't like being called a liar much. They can, have, and may grenade either engine or gearbox and there is plenty of documented cases of it happening.

Because no other makes of early, brand new model bikes engines never blow up either, right?

On launch, the 2011 ZX10 was on "technical hold" and kawi recalled them all. Hmmm....wonder why....... in the same article, the author says.....

"I reported on the problems Aprilia had last year with the RSV4 R model where engines blew up at the Mugello launch. Engineers were not afraid to talk and immediately told me what they thought to be the problem and later this was specified."

I'm pretty happy with mine.
The frame gets insanely hot on the left side in traffic. It's a problem...but one I'm prepared to live with. Once you get out of the city and hit some open roads its fine.
What else...oh yeah, easiest bike I've ever ridden. Might be dangerous because its easy to get overconfident in your abilities.
It feels like its on rails all the time, and I'm quite happy to have ABS and DTC preventing me from doing something really stupid.

Apart from the heat, my only gripe is the brakes...I'd like them to come on a little stronger.

I did invest in an MRA windscreen, and a new seat, as well as some other comfort mods. Its setup pretty good for me now.

Correct. Fixed before there were a lot of people with troubles.

By comparison, Marcel Irnie had the electronics go on his bike twice and had to fight tooth and nail to get them to replace the motor in his S1000RR, as it ran but made about 25hp less than expected. A year later, he has the bike back (as of a couple weeks ago) and it's running far better. I don't know if it was done on warranty or not, however.

True. However they were almost all press bikes and a small number of production bikes. As far as I know, no customer ever received these. It was a supplier flaw.

BMW had a pile of engines recalled this spring and had dealers take them apart to re-torque rod bolts, too. In its third year of manufacture, which is odd.

Are you kidding me? How many folks on the Aprilia RSV4 forum have had engines replaced and have issues with valve clatter and valve lash issues?

As I already said the fact california superbike uses them to circle the track all day long should be enough to stop any discussion about reliability

I've seen this posted a couple of times. Why do people believe traction control is only needed at the track? To me, it is equally as valuable on the street. I ride 9-10mths which includes commuting every day during this period. I ride on wet roads, cold roads, wet and cold roads, dirty roads etc. Traction control is very useful for riding on the street in anything other then optimal riding conditions. I just can't see how both ABS and traction control are not "street friendly".

if you only ride it on the street then you don't need traction control, if you ride it on the track then you will need it big time.

What a crazy thread! Never heard of AMA Superstock. "I've raced plenty of S1000rrs" -track days are not racing, if you know the track and have more guts then the other track day guy you don't need the fastest bike to out gun anyone...no race guy would ever say that. Funny stuff! To the OP- My experience> very reliable, very refined, awesome brakes, the power is fantastic (as it is with all litre bikes) comfortable enough to ride 1000 miles in 18 hours. It's not the only great bike around that would be silly, but if it speaks to you go for it!
