Best way to sell/trade car towards a motorcycle?

Any tips on this process? So far it seems most motorcycle dealerships will only basically help by saving me some tax on the sale to a wholesaler for a rock bottom price. I'd definitely get more in trade in value at a car dealership for example. Thanks!

Sell your car privately, take money and buy bike.

This right here is the advice.

A car dealership won't give you any money for your car unless you buy from there...hence the 'trade-in' value that is available.

However, I presume you have another car for the winter season. My opinion but I'd recommend NOT trading a car for a bike exclusively in this climate.

Post the car on kijiji/auto trader and then deal with it that way.

Good luck.

Generally trade-in values are pretty atrocious......

What kind of car do you want? and what bike do you want? There are dealerships that do both motorcycles and cars... so we could help narrow it down if you gave more information.

Depending on what you have for a car, why not place an ad on kijiji or CL to offer a trade. Car for bike desired. If it's reasonable, straight up or trade plus cash etc.

Otherwise, private list and sell.

The hassle of selling is on you. Dealing with the low ball offers, tire kickers etc.

Or get a real low offer of trade in value and let the dealer put up with the hassle.

But, there is no magic wand. Just because you think your car is worth x, doesn't mean you can get that.

Good luck.

Depends on the dealer and what you are buying. When I traded an old honda accord, it had been in a major accident, the dealer paid me more then I would get for it selling it privately. They did this because I was buying a new Outback. Doubt I would have gotten that deal buying something used.

Traded in my 2010 BMW R1200GSA about a month ago, they are selling it for about $1000 more then what they gave me on trade in. The price was good, no hassle dealing with people looking, plus the service it would have needed, brakes, etc.

Hard to say anything without knowing any details about the car and what you are wanting to buy.

Also you save the the taxes on the trade-in value... which a lot of people don't account for.

I usually find a private buyer, and do a "courtesy sale" through the dealership.

Basically it works like this:

1) Find buyer for your vehicle, say $10,000
2) You trade the vehicle to dealership, pay for new vehicle and get $10,000 as trade-in value
3) Person that wanted to buy my vehicle pays dealership $10,000 + hst and has new vehicle..

Generally costs about $300 to do this at the dealership. This works easily for cars/trucks because people expect to pay taxes. Motorcycles.... not so much. Everything seems to think they can pay $1 in tax and get away with it.

TBH it's a lot of work and finicky... but definitely worth it.

I traded in a newish car for a dirtbike this summer. Could not sell the car privately in a year and got fed up with tire kickers so I traded it in for new bike. Lost lots of money in the process but the new bike made me smile and I didn't lose much riding time.
