Yes, I’m sure I’ve heard of it happening before. The perpetrators obviously used a stolen getaway truck or stolen plates but there must be some kind of tracker in the ATM.
Many toronto precincts have a single car on duty overnight. I can't see Brooklin having a ton more. It's not hard to get all on duty to run to a distant location.That looks like a lot of work for a smallish payday if you`re caught. Yeah right!! Who am I kidding? You could kill a carload of Nuns and puppies getting away and still make bail the same day. That whole system must be alarmed, lots of cops in that photo, where were they at 3AM, can`t see Brooklin being chaotic busy then.
No tracker's in retail bank ATMs as far as I know. The haul for a single ATM in a place like Brooklin could be between $50 and $100K on regular weekday. On Saturday at 3AM it may have been $250K.
I witnessed 3 guys in a Supra throw a garbage can through the window of a Shoppers Drug Mart at Warden & 7 and run in with green garbage bags, stealing smokes. We were on break at the Loblaws in the plaza, that was about 2AM in the summer of `90 or`91. One of our crew called 911 and in 60 to 90 seconds there were at least 8 cops arriving at high speed from all directions. Crazy like a movie. The Supra crew loaded the car and blasted off, south down Warden with the cops in tow. About an hour passes and one of the cops comes back and tells us they called the chase off near 401 as speeds were well over 100 mph. A week or so later another cop stops by to tell us they caught the same crew in Scarborough doing the same B & E.
It’s actually on a corner within 50 yards or less of 2 provincial highways, Highway 12 and Highway 7 which have traffic at all hours. I’m sure a few people saw what was happening. There’s also a 24 hour Tim Hortons maybe 100 yards away. It wasn’t exactly in middle of nowhere.That looks like a lot of work for a smallish payday if you`re caught. Yeah right!! Who am I kidding? Maybe they have another stolen excavator at their destination. Every second saved on site reduces your chances off being caught.

If you are off the hook enough to be casually cruising around town at 3AM in a 50T excavator adding another minute on to the police response lottery wouldn't be that big of a deal.
