Another reason to get your M as soon as possible

I would be careful how and if you drive in the near future. The letters can be very slow. Some people haven't found out that their license was suspended until they were pulled over, and then it becomes a much bigger issue.

You might want to check and see if your license has already been suspended before you are pulled over for it.

I'm not sure if ignorance would be a defense in this situation.

In addition to being slow the ministry doesn't always have the right address to send to. I've also heard people complain that they never received said letter of notice of suspension. My coworker was unknowingly driving on a suspended licence when he got pulled over for a seatbelt issue and he was looking at jail time for driving on a suspended licence. The crown wanted to make an example of him because in our region there is a lot of driving while suspended. Ignorance is NOT a defence.

Ignorance of the law is not a defence, however, ignorance of the fact that your licence is suspended is.

How would I go about that exactly? Get a driver's abstract? [Edit: to answer my own question, yes.]

I suppose if I have been suspended, it would start at or around the time that payment for my ticket was received and wouldn't end until after I go in to pay a re-instatement fee?

Got an abstract, I'm not suspended (but I am $12 poorer).

If they simply haven't processed the suspension yet, I'm not going to worry too much. They can't very well expect people to keep paying for abstracts to make sure they're ok.

The other thing that occurred to me is that maybe the new rules only apply to people who became novice drivers after August 1, 2010. I got my M2 in 2009.

I got my M2 September 10, 2010.

Here's one big reason for me...

DEMO DAYS!

These companies are getting really uptight 'bout letting M2 riders take a 600+ out. At least they should decide that by kms driven or how long you've had your M2. At the beginning of the year, I got lucky with Honda and Yamaha taking out a CBR600, FVR800, and a F800. But I just recently went to a Suzuki and Kawi demo...and it was a flop! The Kawi Demo at Kahuna yesterday was the kicker for me. It was just a waste of time waking up early going, but atleast I got some free stuff =D

So there's my rant. Hope I didn't threadjack...kinda just jumped in with this.

Safe+Happy riding!

Yeah, it is possible to go pass your m2 with one of the schools and still be a bit shaky on the road but you met the ministry requirements for the test. The M is a little trickier to pass as it requires you actually ride on the road. Obviously the companies providing the demo's want to ensure that they have the least risk. The first demo ride I went on had a rider that was not comfortable on the bike and not comfortable going over the speed limit (the rides tended to be 20-30 over). It was obvious she didn't have much experience.

Are you implying that if you do your M2 with the Ministry, that you will never be shaky on the road? I don't think that riding around a couple of cones counts for very much, but that's just me.

Demo ride i was on I had to keep on the brakes to avoid running into the back of the 600's, at least until we got rolling quite fast. Then they'd take off like they had afterburners. I'm not sure what training the riders had, but it was a little annoying having to hold the big 250 back.

Crap! I still have my M2 from 2009, and I have been waiting/saving to get a bike to do my M test.. Anyone able to comment on how hard the M test is compared to the M2 test? I took the M2 school program, so i got tested there.

I had a 6 pointer and a 3 pointer within a year and a few months of each other. got a letter warning of a possible meeting if received, I think it was 3 more. nothing else.

oh wait. my tickets happened before Aug 2010. nevermind.

you can take the test through the same place where you took the M1 exit course and test. If you don't have a bike, you could probably rent one. I know that GTA exotics has bikes for rent. even 250 ninjas.

Not at all, I'm stating that regardless how some people get their M2 that they can still be not so strong a rider. I've known a few that passed the course and still weren't comfortable on the road at road speeds. Some one who's only experience on a bike was 2 days riding during a course probably should not be getting on group demo rides because they just don't have the riding experience needed. especially higher power bikes. IIRC Harley demo rides restricted to just M's and if you had your M2 you went out separately from the group with out riders.

No one said you have to get a new bike when you pass the test, you can get a preowned bike and gain the experience needed to pass your M test. Sadly too many don't get the experience they need because they don't get a bike and then they are scrambling to get their M with no experience when their M2 is expiring... How many "can i borrow a bike" or "where can i rent a bike" posts do we see because of an impending m2 expiry?

With the M test you pretty much have to have riding experience to pass. Knowing things like how to start on a hill, checking your mirrors, blind spots, looking at possible hazards, speed (too fast/slow) lane positioning, what you do at stop lights/signs, basically how safe a rider you are and how you do in traffic. The more experience you get the better rider you should be. What do they teach in the riding schools? practice makes perfect.

I have heard some of the bikes some of these rental places can be a little rough, as in they won't pass the safety check done before the test.
