Alternative to OEM piston rings (suzuki)?

Rebuilding my old 2001 GSXR 600 engine, needs new piston rings, which, surprise surprise - are on back order from Suzuki.

Anyone recommend alternative supplier? I've got an email off to Wiseco for a ring kit, as thier ring kits aren't exactly 100% match to OEM sizes.

Cylinder bore: 66.98mm
Piston O.D.: 66.64mm
Top Ring: 0.98mm
Second Ring: 0.78mm
Oil rings: 1.88mm

Engine builders? Thoughts, opinions, suggestions? Canadian supplier?

get a used engine?

Wait out the back-order if at all possible.

My experience with aftermarket piston rings resulted in a second engine teardown and replacement with a set of OEM rings. It also appears that the second and oil control rings are oddball thicknesses in your case, which does not help matters any.

Exactly what BrianP said. I just had my 08 Gsxr 1000 rebuilt and oem rings are reccomended by every person that I spoke to and everything I read while researching on the net.

did you try any places in the US ?

I have dealt with Boulevard Suzuki in the past

http://www.boulevardsuzuki.com/

.

I suggest the same, I have done exactly that in the past when facing 3 week back orders...Since Canada and US dealers do not share part supplies for motorcycles, they could have them in stock in NY or somewhere very close...There were some Honda bearings I needed for a trip that were back ordered in Canada, I got them from a US dealer, they ordered them from Honda US got them the next day and shipped to me overnight...

And hearing its a Suzuki I really suggest looking elsewhere, as the last time I had stuff on back order from Suzuki Canada it took over a month to get the stuff in...

Total Seal has rings for OEM, JE and wiseco for a '01 GSXR600 and they're warehoused in Barrie.

Total Seal are as good as if not better than anyone.
I highly recommend the gap-less rings IF they have them for that application.

Total Seal has rings for everything.

Not according to their site, did you call them?
From their site

OE and Wiesco from 97-00 and only JE for 01-03

Thanks all!

I will try Total seal in barrie (thanks bitzz) but I just got off the phone with the dealer 'cross the border, and not only is the part cheaper with less sales tax, but the US Suzuki warehouse has the parts in stock, where Canada is Back ordered.

Thanks again!

PS: Oh, and RockerGuy - I'm kinda not wanting stock power output, hense the rebuild. The other guys probably already knew that. :)

Yay! Canadian Dealers.
Please stop cross border shopping, you are putting people out of jobs here.
I know you want to spend your money but you can wait 1 month or more can't you. I mean that leaves you at least 4 months of good riding season.

What if your racing and you race two series which both hold a race in that month and it costs you a title? It's self pride winning that title but it sure is a piss off waiting for an engine to be finished while your competitors race (ask me how I know). I'm big on supporting local shops but when all else fails you do what you have to, this isn't ordering tires to save $30.

Why would anyone want to wait one month before they could ride again? It won't just be one month either. He'll wait a month for the rings, then wait however long it takes for him to put the engine back together and have it running.

Sorry I might have missed that part

lol no worries Rockerguy.

As for someones comment about Canadian shopping etc. I called around, attempted to locate a dealer which would have them in stock. I called an alternative Canadian supplier, to no avail.

So, I have to shop abroad, or buy after riding season done.

Is that the old Hastings? Figure the chances of two "ring" places in Barrie are slight. If so I also recommend them. If not I will shut up as I am not familiar with them.

I hope its Hastings, I'm going to call them tomorrow for the sake of pricing a Canadian supplier.

I could not find a Total Seal in Barrie, via Google at least.

@bitzz can you clarify?

I have never been to Total Seal.
I order rings from them and they come to me from Barrie... in a day or two, no duty or brokerage. They may be shipped from some guy's basement. I don't know, I don't care. I order rings for a 1973 OEM pistoned Ducati and they arrive in a day or two... I don't ask a lot of questions.
It is like Motorstate, I order parts from the company in Michigan, and they come from London, ON.

Update:

Have to go OEM if fitting OEM pistons. Tried Total Seal in the USA. they do not have rings to fit. Tried Hastings in Barrie, they dont sell direct to customers redirected me to a Saskatechewan distributor.

So Suzuki it must be. Boo.

Did you try the US sites like ron ayeres etc? They are usually stocked and ship quickly. Havent used them while in Canada but had some parts sent to Australia a few years ago and price/shipping were good.

Looks like the part number 12140-39F00 is $46 for the set per piston.
