Hi guys, just about to buy a used 80's Yamaha at a good price, owner says he accidentally
dropped into 1st gear from 3rd and now the clutch doesn't feel right. A clutch pak is easy to replace, what I'm worried about is the engine reving WAY too high when he went into 1st and maybe what he is noticing is damage to the engine rather than the clutch.
Any suggestions on what I should look at first? The bike hasn't been started in 5 yrs but turns over and has been stored in a warm garage.
Thanks,
Chris

a leak down test will show you if the other guy floated the valves, or bent the valves, this test is better than a compression test. after 5 years it might need a carb overhaul to hear the engine running to detect any other problems. the transmissions from the 80s were bullit proof, so clutch would be a cheap repair. ask to have the bike certified first or check out by a mechanic, to knock the price down.
