Hi Everyone,

We are EatSleepRIDE, a community of crowd-sourced content that gives motorcycle riders the tools they need to connect, share information, improve the quality of their rides and stay safe. We are based out of Toronto and we wanted to get your thoughts on our new iOS app.

The app, which is now available in iTunes, was years in the making, and we took the time to make it everything a rider could ask for. Here’s a quick look at all of its rad features:

  • CRASHLIGHT detects a motorcycle crash and automatically notifies your emergency contacts with your location. We worked closely with mechanical and physical engineers from the University of Toronto and crash scene scientists to build a sophisticated algorithm to detect where and when a crash occurs

  • Track and analyze your ride. Record your ride analytics including your route, the speed and duration of your ride, including your lean angle and elevation. Perfect for the data nerds among us and the hardcore motorheads who are looking to improve the results of their ride.
  • Explore new routes. Ride like a local and don’t miss the best motorcycle roads nearby.
  • Group riding made easy. Share your location with your ride group to see each other on a map; or make yourself visible to everybody and connect with riders in your area.
  • Create your motorcycle diary. If you have a motorcycle, you have a story to tell. Share your journey, route, and points of interest (favourite cafes, hotels, bars, restaurants).
  • Explore motorcycle content like reviews, routes, tutorials, and news stories from the people who know it best; fellow motorbike riders.

There’s nothing as invigorating as riding the open road. We created the EatSleepRIDE Motorcycles app to not only help riders replay their journey, but to appreciate it on a new level.

We are very excited to hear what others in the GTA riding community think about the app. If you like the app, just click to tweet.

Cool idea. A few things I noticed with a quick review.
1) Typos on webpage
2) Crashlight costs extra, how much is obvious in iTunes, but not immediately obvious on the website.
3) Add the ability to turn off max speed tracking, nothing good comes of that (especially since it keeps track of where that speed occurred)
4) Lean angle tracking is cool (if it works reasonably well), you should probably format as +/- degrees as opposed to 0 to 360. EDIT: you show both ways, webpage is my way, itunes is the other way.
5) I don't like your webpage wanting to know my location. I can say no, but I shouldn't have to, it makes me wonder whether you will track me on the bike as well. I want to track me, I may want my friends to track me, I don't want you to track me (at least as an identifiable entity, completely anonymous may be ok). If any tracking happens, it cannot happen within a few km of the start of the ride, it's way to easy to use these maps to figure out where bikes are stored to go "shopping".
6) Your price seems reasonable.
7) I am assuming this continues recording when roaming (ie. no cell data usage)? Obviously maps won't work, but data could/should be overlaid on a map when a data connection is available. Not immediately obvious from website.

As a future development idea (of which you probably already have a million), marketing this to bicycle riders could bring you another source of money, the program probably doesn't even need to be changed, just the marketing.

Good luck, keep up the good work, it looks like you could have something good here.

Welcome!!

Hi GreyGhost, thanks for your questions!

1) Can't find the typos - sorry feel like idiot - pls point them out and we'll fix them ASAP.

2)Yes CrashLight costs $8.99 per year. And it's NOT automatically renewed every year. The reason we have to charge for it is explained in the CrashLight FAQ; you can see here http://esr.cc/13KRkh6

3)The speed is only shared locally on your device. It's not sharable in any way. We suggest you protect your privacy by locking your iPhone screen so only you can access your device information - including speed.

4) Lean angle works very well. We explain how hit works in this article http://esr.cc/15rumjq

5a) For SHARE YOUR LOCATION - here's how it works: You can share your location with only your group. For group riding, exact location is shared because obscuring it would defeat the purpose of finding someone in your group who may be lost.

5b) There is an option to stay private. Set SHARE MY LOCATION to NOBODY and your location will NOT be shared with anyone.

5c) As for tracking - Even when your location is shared with EVERYONE, your location is cleared after 24 hours of inactivity. The idea for sharing your location with EVERYONE is that you can hook up for a ride without having to plan ahead. People can share their location with Everyone when NOT at their home location. However, you make a good point and we'll obscure the SHARE YOUR LOCATION with EVERYONE to a number of KMs in the next two days.

5d) PRIVACY is maintained when sharing a route because you can trim the start and end points of your route before you share it. See the screenshot attached.

6) Thanks. The App has been in the works for a long time and much investment has gone in to the development of the App. We wanted to keep the price reasonable to reach as many riders as possible. If you compare it with SPOT (although we're not on the Iridium satellite system) EatSleepRIDE Motorcycles is a fraction of the cost and no extra tapping is required by the rider to share your location.

7) You can record your ride outside of data coverage because your iPhone will receive a GPS signal and create points on the map. Regardless, ROAMing can be turned off in the iphone settings. This is what you'll see when you enter a non-coverage area:

"You need a data connection to view the map but GPS is still recording your ride!"

Once you get to a WiFi network, the map image will be created to match the GPS points. Anyway, turn your screen off while you're recording your ride to optimize power consumption.
