A/c recharge

I want to do this the right way. Some say just add freon from the bottle. Others say get the whole system drained and recharged. I obviously don't want to pay for something I don't need but I also don't want to waste money on something I'll need to do over.

My car is a 2005 c230. Air blows but it just isn't cold.

Anyone recommend a shop to do this?

The right way would be to vacuum and refill the system with a special dye freon. That way you can see where the leak is coming from and have it fixed.

For quite some time my a/c didnt work and no one was able to figure it out. Took it to a small shop, they refilled it from a bottle and claimed all was well. Took it to acura sherway and those thieves replaced the thermal protector and claimed to have recharged it and 500$ later it still didnt work.

Finally i took it to this guy, http://www.ludexauto.com , knew him from years back and he recharged it the right way and found the actual problem. Recharge the right way, plus diagnosis and adjusting the condenser clutch cost me $100.

Thanks Paul. Will call him today.

So For sure there's a leak?

A leak is possible. But take a few seconds to check some basics

1. Does the AC Clutch engage when you turn the AC on?
2. Does the condenser/rad fan(s) come on when you turn the AC on?

If yes to both above, then you can test the system for leaks (In majority of cases it's the condenser - Of course not always)

Just stay away from the dealership on this one.

What.......a Mercedes and the AC is not working.........tell me it isn't so .......LOL

What does the brand have to do with anything? It's a machine. Machines break.

Absolutely nothing,,,,,but the OP will get it.......you might say it's an inside joke....well that is if he remembers who I am.......if not, it was a futile attempt at some humor....

You from Puremb?

My car has been pretty good. No major repairs. Had to replace ball joints that's about it.

1. I don't know what that is.

2. Fan turns on and air comes out, just not cold

I thought on some cars AC's clutches don't engage is system pressure is bellow limit

A lot of newer vehicles no longer have a clutch on the A/C compressor. They use variable-displacement compressors that are always spinning with the engine, they just shift to (near) zero displacement when the A/C is off. German cars started doing this around the same era as the original poster's car, so it could be either way.

The radiator fan should always be spinning any time the A/C is on - but if the A/C is being kept off by the system controls (pressure switch, temperature switch, etc) that might not happen.

This is a job for an A/C specialist shop. Yes, I know you can buy refill kits to allow you to overcharge the system or cause it all to leak out again through the leak that you never found.

Whoa all this is over my head. I have a appointment with ludexauto as Paul recommended. Will report tomorrow if they sort everything out

Oh yeah. Talked to Raf seems to be a honest guy. Told me he recharged to see if there's a leak and it didn't hold any freon at all. Compressor is gone so brand new with labor is $1200ish. Guess I'll be rolling with the windows down all summer. For a $5000 car it ain't worth it.

Since we are on the subject.....

Have an 01 Ford Truck. The AC works, but as the temp rises and it gets really hot outside, it starts blowing warm air. But if the temperatures drop but still hot outside, it blows cold.

If it was a leak, it wouldn't blow any cold air, correct? Maybe just a recharge? AC system hasn't been touched since new, and the vehicle has 450k on it, and still going strong.

Sounds like low charge rather than no charge Sunny. Compressor is probably short-cycling and the system is able to remove some heat up to a point. You can throw a can of refrigerant in it and see what happens.
