98 zx6r valve adjustment quote..

I am not a tech so I thought I should ask here. I took the bike to champion cycle and talked to the guy about weird valve noise and a leak near valve gasket. He recommended to adjust valves since it sounded like it needed it..Also, he said he has to do oil change with that. all is going to cost $400. is this a fair price and do you need to change oil when you are adjusting the clearance. bike is 98 zx6r and got 59k on it ..it sux cuz i just did oil change about 700km ago.

This raises a whole lot of red flags for me.

First; no, a valve adjustment does not require an oil change.

Second, I can understand how a non-tech might describe something as a weird valve noise but what is the noise exactly? Did they try to find out? If it's actually the valves making a noticeable noise then you likely have some serious engine damage.

Third, where is the leak exactly? If it's near the valve cover gasket, then it has nothing to do with the valve cover gasket and the source of the leak needs to be located. If it's the valve cover gasket that's got a leak, then that requires a new gasket not a valve job.

thanks for the reply. It surprised me as well. I took the bike there to get checked and make sure it is working fine mechanically.. I called kahuna and coupe of other dealer; they said same thing that you just open the top and you do not need oil change. I am surprised as many people on gtam recommended him to be fair and good tech

Did you end up picking your bike up ? How did everything work out ?

At 60K, you likely need valve adjustment, this is labour intensive.
Sound like you need a gasket as well. While there, they might as well change oil.
$400 is about right. It's three hours of work. These valves adjust by shims under tappets.

See here: you can judge yourself. You likely won't need to do it again for another 50K.

Couldn't have said it better. It's like people who only change on wheel bearing. If the rim is already off the bike you mine as well change the other. This goes for the valve check/shim. You are pulling the cover to replace the gasket it's not much more to check the valves. As for the oil change I personally always do it right after any internal engine work. Normally you complete the work then go for a test ride and then do the oil change. This way if any minute debris has fallen into the engine it wont get cycled through or clog the filter.

cthanks for the insight..greatly appreciated. I picked up the bike past Wed. Dan (champion cycle) explained the work he did. He ended up doing only 2 shims and replaced the valve cover. the cover was wrongly placed from the last time someone opened it up (previous owner). Also, he did me a favor and did 3 pulls on the dyno to see my air fuel ratio. All in all I say he did pretty good job. I asked him to check out lower handle bar bearing since it was knocking everytime I brake hard. He had to tighten it a lil since it was loose. It still does knock but not as much. I will have to see him for that. Bike is running great so far. Dyno pull answered one of Q I had.. I am running very rich so when I give it around 100 it bogs a little.
