I was at an OPP safety seminar and the KSI (Killed or seriously injured) events were discussed. There aren't a lot of specialists so they may have to wait, with the highway closed, for one to arrive. It sucks to be in the jam.

When my brother was a traffic cop and there was fatality they would hold the vehicle for things like brake tests (Pre ABS) to measure skid mark lengths to estimate speeds etc.
