Cleaning will prevent further wearing of your chain. Why lube up the dirt?

I use the Motul chain lube and cleaner. Usually clean and relube after every 2-3 rides depending on km and terrain I've covered. Best to leave the Motul overnight though as I find it'll fling a lot unless it sits.

I use the Ram X Grip on my Iphone 5s with the Lifeproof case, mounted with the Ram fork stem mount. Works great. Phone doesn't budge.

I started out on a 2006 SV650s. Anything less than 600cc, you will be bored with after a couple weeks. The SV is good on insurance, and still lets you have a good time. Plus, you can take it out to the track if you're so inclined.

Heard from my sister that there was a bike down on Appleby Line yesterday. Don't know the circumstances, but hopefully the rider is okay.

For cutting threads. There's this one, which I used, and there's adjustable ones that are circular and have a set screw for adjusting the depth with which to cut.

***Update*** With the help if my friends in our machine shop, we sourced a die nut and I was able to clean up the threads enough to spin a new filter back on with no issues.

Apparently it's not a replaceable item on the 1000. The 600 and 750 are replaceable only. What about filing down the damage to a taper so the filer bypasses it and running a die down the remaining thread?

Looks like someone jammed a screwdriver through a previous oil filter. That part is replaceable, just a PITA.
