    DIY cam chain tensioner gasket?

as another option to the loctite 515/gasket maker suggestions, Canadian Tire sells a combo pack of 4 sheets of gasket material (thin rubber, thin paper, thicker rubber and cork) in something like 8" x 8" squares. I have used these materials for everything from replacing paper gaskets for my cam...

    Electrical problem : Help please

i dont know. most of what i faced was poorly seated connectors and whatnot. also, check your body grounds, both the ones at the coil and the ones from the engine to frame. If you have repainted the frame or engine then the paint or whatever could be degrading the connection. I remade the body...

Got the replacement caliper (and a few banjo bolts) to finish off the braking system. Super nice, and quick delivery too. Can't complain. I also rewired the fuse box so that it wouldn't be all melty and stuff. The PO rewired it (I don't think this is the original fuse box, and if it is, it...

@Old Suzy: thanks! I really like them too. I don't know if the wife will be stoked on them though, so they may be replaced with black ones. We shall see.

    Electrical problem : Help please

my bet (once again based on the intimate knowledge I have of these bikes) is that its a connector issue or something like that. Those coils are robust, so is the TCI despite what other people say. the tach signal has no bearing on the functioning of the coil. I have had this issue in the past...

So, the build is wrapping up right now, and it's just down to the little things. I have been slowly checking them off the list, but it's not a glamorous process, so there aren't many pictures to take of it. Here is the list: Loctite bolts (mainly front end stuff, but also misc bolts...

    Apex brakes

I had a stock set for my 78 CB550 that I wanted to have replicated in SS braid. I tried for a few days to track them down to try and get an answer as to whether I can drop off the stock setup somewhere to be replicated. Never did work out. I ended up calling Pro6, dropped em off same day, and...

    finally got some quotes(Paul South)

hey supernova, from one 'new' rider to another, you're gonna drop it. may not necessarily crash it, but it will at least be dropped in a parking lot or garage. its nothing against you, but its a near certainty. Murphy's law and all that, so plan for the eventuality that it will be down at some...

Insurance hard to get for older bikes?

yeah, thats about right as far as I can tell. i've got my own gripes over how insurance works for 2nd/3rd/nth bikes but yeah, for an old CB550, I don't know where to go to get liability less than 600/yr. i also was not able to get collision/comprehensive on it.

Just a quick update. I have ran into problems bleeding my front brake. (if you have trouble bleeding the rear, your problems are bigger than you think, haha ;)) Anyway, the MC was not allowing fluid into the lines. The MC was professionally rebuilt, but I think that the rebuild kit was not the...

Insurance hard to get for older bikes?

i called hagerty when i tried to insure my 78 CB550. they dont write motorcycle policies in canada apparently. even though i know that there are bike policies here by them. all the major places wont touch it because its more than 30 yrs old as a matter of 'policy'. StateFarm will insure my...

    Electrical problem : Help please

yeah, it sounds like a plug connection issue. if you need a spare set of hand controls for it, let me know. I am pretty sure that i have my old set from my XV500 virago (which is the same as the XV750)

    Electrical problem : Help please

is the hand control plugged into the loom? are there broken pins in the plug in the headlight bucket plug? alternatively, is the plug for the keyswitch fully seated? i know these bikes pretty well. usually its something really simple that is not working perfectly, not a major component...

    Electrical problem : Help please

usually the kick stand switch interlock on the early viragos is the culprit. hardly ever the neutral switch. your interlocks are the clutch, side stand and neutral switches this is only if its a stock XV.

I was sick last week so it put me on my ass to the point that I did want to go in and work on it. But I got it running last night. Starts right up too. The carbs have been rebuild and bench-synced, but I still need to fiddle a bit, and get the idle set. Also, it seems the float valve in #2...

Weird noise when kill switch turns on

agreed. that sounds like the servo trying to cycle open and closed and not being able to for whatever reason (probably a kinked cable since its a push/pull system) or maybe the gear in the servo motor is all chowdered up.

Ooohhhhhh... thats a tough call. I would ruin it if I got my hands on it, so don't give it to me. I was hoping to do a CBR250R custom next. I want to strip the fairings off and make it a SuMo/dual sport that I can ride in the winter.... so this bike probably shouldnt go to me.... but you.... i...
